hi everyone. so im about to download the updates for my 798c SI. i;ve had it for about a year...my main complaint is GSP tracking is way off from my actuall boat position.
the instructions recomend that the unit be set back to default settings before downloading. by doing this will i lose all my waypoints, gps tracks ect i've put on the unit over the last year?
also, has anyone experianced any difficulties or new problems after downloading a new update?
thanks in advance for your help! Dan

No you won't lose your tracks/routes/waypoints in the process of the update.
BUT if it would make you feel more secure, you can export all your NAV data to an SD card and copy to your hard drive for safe keeping (probably a good idea anyway). The Restore unit to defaults and perform update, then restore defaults one more time after the update. Now you can set all your settings Sensitivity etc. Like you had them before the update. OH!! you didn't write down all of your settings before the update? Oops, hop0e your memory is better than mine ;)

Dan,
Yes I, and some others have experienced new problems after an update.
But, in my humble opinion, the newest update will have more pluses than
minuses.
It takes work for Humminbird to put out a new update. They don't just do it
because is fashionable.
There are very good reasons for these updates, some of which we won't
know all of the reasons why.
I go on faith that my machine will be better off after updating.
Also,
If you have a problem with your unit and call HB customer service.
The first thing they will ask you is what version of the software you are running, and recommend you to update if you have not.
Just make sure that you don't touch your machine while it is doing the update process. Download your update to an SD card (do not put it in your machine yet).
Set all of your settings to factory default.
Insert the card.
After the update, reset your settings to factory default.
Good Luck.

I see humminbird has a new update 5.590 for the 798. I have not loaded the 5.500 yet on mine yet. Do I put 5.590 on and skip the 5.500? or can I load both versions on the same card? thanks,Earl

Earl,
When you load the latest software you also get all of the changes made in prior software as well. So you can load just the latest 5.590 to your 798ci HD Si unit and get everything.

THANKS very much

I am glad this update fixes the gps tracking at low speeds. I have had real problems when marking on side imaging while idling through areas. I have figured out that if you speed up for just a second the course will correct itself. I plan on installing the new software tonight.

thanks everyone and good question Nitro...i was wondering the same. im going to do the up-dates tonight.

Which browser are you using to download the update and do you have an SD card slot in your PC/Laptop, Mac or an SD card reader attached to your computer

Dan,
The sd card fits inside of an sd reader.
If you don't have an sd reader, you can buy one for a few bucks (make sure it is compatible with your sd card).
The reader plugs into the USB port in your computer.
You can download the update directly to the sd card.
It's probably drive E: (after inserting the sd reader with the sd card in it).
After inserting the sd reader, right click on Start (left bottom of computer screen), then Explorer, and you should see the new sd drive on the bottom left of your screen.
Good Luck.

thanks guys. do i have to have the sd card reader inserted into the computer before i down load the update to my computer? if so, i didnt do that. sorry for my serious lack of computer skills. pretty brutle huh? i'll be tring again tonight after work...hope it works. im heading out for a back country fishing trip this thursday for 5 nights. this part of the lake is absolutly covered in shoals...would be nice if my unit gps trackin was bang on for this trip. thanks again guys...i'll let you know how i make out.

You can download to the computer and then copy to a cd later...

Dan,
Probably the best and easiest way to get the download is to first have the sd reader (with sd card in it) inserted in your computer.
Then download the update directly to the sd card.
Then, if you want to make a backup of the download:
Right click on Start (at the bottom of your computer screen),
Left click, on Explore.
Then scroll down to find the drive with the sd reader (probably E:).
Then left click on that drive.
Find the file with a .bin extention (that is the update), and right click on it, then left click on copy.
Then scroll to a folder you want to save it in, and right click on the folder name, then right click on paste.
Good Luck
