Title: Really Annoying Problem
Post by: BaitCaster on July 05, 2011, 03:54:31 PM
Whenever I am out in choppy water my 798 will shut off when the boat is jarred by a wave.  Sometimes it shuts off even when I am just adjusting the screen.  Is there a fix to this problem?

That sounds strange! Are you sure the power connection to you unit is ok ? No fuse holder, no plug thats not as fixed as it should be ?

Hi BaitCaster,

I have had the same problem on my 998c-SI, and as Del suggested, it may be the power connection.

The Humminbird cable plugs does not always provide a firm connection, so it is really important to secure them well in the back of the unit. Some people have suggested bending the pins slightly, just so that the plug will be "held in place".

This is another chronic problem with pretty much all models.  It is often suggested to get as solid a power connection as possible to insure good performance,  including using a spade type fuse.  This can do little to help if the unit connector itself is a weak link.
With the power quality being so critical, HB REALLY needs to improve the power connectors and come up with some sort of retrofit fix if a customer is having issues...not just bending the pins on the plug.

Had the same problem with my unit. Watch bending pins broke one off this weekend. Calling HB Monday morning to see what they can do. Unit finally locked totally up.

Yes, you dont need to really bend them.  You just need to put a little pressure to move them ever so slightly.

Called 800 number Monday waited 15 min. had to hangup had other things to do. Did exchange emails with customer service.Called 800 number today got an answer right away explained my problem and was told to ship it back. Good start we'll see how it turns out. Love the unit when it's working but bad connections in a rough environment is a bad combo.

Same problem with my 798c si unit and it is 3 months out of warranty.  I checked all of my connections then swapped it with my 788c unit and verified the problem stayed with the 798c si unit.  I sent the unit in last week.  Have not heard or seen anything yet.  My unit became progressively worse and at the end would shut off when simply pushing buttons.  This is the second time I've sent the 798c si unit in for repairs.  I've sent my 788c unit in once and also I am having problems with my Interlink unit.  I am very disappointed in Humminbirds quality, especially after paying out close to $2K for units, cables, Interlink, etc.  I guess I expected more???

Just received transducer and installed in the boat. Everthing works fine in the driveway won't be able to get on the water til next week. Invoice I received back from repair of the 798 said loose ribbon cable connection. It's an internal connection you can't get at without opening the unit which will void any warranty.

::)  That may be what the receipt says... of course, receipts only display what somebody makes them display. ;)
