Title: Most recent firmware update
Post by: S-O-L on June 07, 2011, 12:40:51 AM
Just curious what issues the most recent firmware updates for the 798 address.  I read somewhere that the most recent firmware update will allow me to use Down imaging as well as side imaging.  I bought my unit in October of 2010, and have not updated it yet.  I figured if everything works well enough for me why bother.  But I would be willing to update it if it would give me the ability to use SI and DI...

SOL

If you use the following address you will see all of the updates for your 798:

I am not familiar with the 798 so I can not tell you about Down Imaging for your unit.

Yes you will get the Down Imaging sonar capabilities and a whole lot more too.  The Di sonar was added back in January of 2010 so your unit must have been on the shelf or in a warehouse for many months before you bought it.

Should add that you only have to load the latest version of software and it will contain the changes from all of the previous versions as well.

I just got my 798ci si NVB back from Humminbird after a GPS failure. When I look at the self test screen, the version of software says 5.45. When I look in the link above I see what might decipher into 5.21. I guess that there are different versions of the software for the newer 798 HD version.

How would I get information on the latest version of the previous incarnation of the 798?

What information are you looking for?

Here are the notes on the 5.450 software release:
This release includes several miscellaneous fixes not obvious to the user.
  It also includes:
Fixes for Interlink issues, including phantom waypoints.
Added Interlink icons
New start up icons
Course over ground fixes
Fixes for problems during navigation at slow speeds
Ice Mode fixes
Display custom chart menus if custom chart layer is turned on.
Safety added to downrigger depth alarm for CannonLink users.
Fixes waypoint skip problem.

That what you were looking for?

Thanks Greg, good information.

I was really trying to find out if the older NVB 798 had the same software revisions as the newer HD 798 model. Most likely not with the older not being HD (or is that just marketing?).

If there is different software for the older NVB model, is it available on this site or only from Humminbird?

For the most part: all different model numbered units have their own software update.  Now I did say for “the most part”; as some NVB version units end up using the same software update as their non-NVB counterparts.  So your 798c Si NVB may now be using the same software update as the 798c Si unit does.  The newer 798ci HD Si units (there is no NVB version of this unit) uses a different software altogether.  Each unit should only recognize only their own software and ignore the others so you should not worry about getting the wrong software loaded.
Personally I would get it from the Humminbird web site unless I needed and older version of software.
