Title: new guy saying hi
Post by: recon1st on May 27, 2011, 11:44:01 AM
Hi all I have just purchased a 1198c si. I am looking forward to
learning how to use this equipment and this forum.

My interest's are a little different, I have built a personal submarine and
plan to use the Hummingbird on it to locate neat stuff down to 350 ft
in Lake Superior

Congratulations and welcome to the fourm... Interesting concept.
I am interested in the criteria you used to select SI over something like forward or sector scan sonar for the sub.
Keep us updated on your project and especially pictures.
Chuck

NOTE: to Robert, do we need another subtopic for submarines...

Hi Chuck my selecting this unit was not very scientific, I'm afraid.
It was a birthday present from my wife. Not going to complain.
First choice would have been something from Blue View. It should
be kinda like a really big tow fish.

Thanks Dean, and as always keep us up to date on developments.
Is this sub a manned sub or remote controlled.....? or a very large towfish????
Roddy you may want to chat with this guy...

not very nice, not saying anymore about a submarine.

it can be seen at http://www.psubs.org/projects/1234567808/recon1/ (http://www.psubs.org/projects/1234567808/recon1/)

It is a 1 atmosphere dry 2 man sub.
350 ft is it's maximum working depth
12 hp 72vdc motor
life support with 72 hr emergency ability.
overal length 21'
weight 6000 lbs

I am in the testing and fixing bug stage and should
get in the water this year in July

It is completely home built except for the actual pressure hull
welds which were done by a professional

Getting sonar to work will be a challenge and hope I can get
some assistance from this group

;D... ::)... :P... who are you kidding.  We want to see your project.. This forum is not only about sideimaging but in the uses of and for... :D
Nice website and great sub.  What an undertaking.
Was not sure from your post just what you were building so the pictures are great.
We have a lot of folks on this forum who go well beyond the edge and are very creative in building "stuff".
Glad to have you aboard and we all look forward to your incorporation of the HB unit into your submarine and are interested in the scans you may do. Please post recorded snapshots as this project progresses...

Dean; Nice build!! :) If Blue Vue is out, Check out Interphase Twin Scope Foward Looking Sonor. They have 5 or 6 types of foward looking sonor. I have a twin scope mounted on my boat, it's neat. >:D Good luck and Enjoy Roddy
