Hi,

I have some experience with a 997c si on a skiff, I have a Garmin 2010C on my boat and it's dying... again.  I'm considering replacing it with maybe an 1198c si or the 1158c.

I use the boat mostly for bottom fishing in 30' to 150' of water, currently I have a shoot through the hull transducer that seems to do an adequate job.

So here are my questions:  What transducer (transducerS) should I consider? 

Can I do this install myself?  How hard is it anyway?

Mark; the stsndard HB Trans mt and xducer that part of the HB  1197/1198 Unit/kit works fine.

I fish/dive/wr hunt with a Tm Mount and a tow fish with a 797c2 si ahti unit has fine pix from 1" to 200".

There are no "in hull"  SI/xducer mounting.

I think there is a HB "thru hull" mount. (poke a big hole in the bottom :'().

You have options and it will all depend on what it is that you want from the sonar.
 The HBSI "bigfoot" transducer is great but does have some problems once you go above trolling speeds. . Not all experience the problem  but there are a lot of factors to consider for the bigfoot ducer.
I would play around on the forum a bit in the search tab at the top and also see what has been posted in the gallery for pictures.
Roddy has a good handle on the transducers so look at what he posted..
What kind of boat do you have? (skiff)

Thanks for the reply.  Is the "Bigfoot" you're referring to the large transom mounted transducer?

I would be putting the 1198 on a 21' center console with a 20 degree deep vee.  There is a flat pad in the aft end of the vee and I think that is where my current transducer is mounted.  My current transducer is epoxied into the hull, not screwed through it or attached to the transom.

If you want to take full advantage of Side Imaging you probably need to install the transducer on the transom.  It is not that difficult to install.  Read the directions closely.  When drill through fiberglass I like to start with a smaller drill and work my way up to the size I need.  When completed a good silicon adhesive will seal the hole.  Lay it out before you start drilling and know how you will get it to your HB unit.  Take your time, if there are any questions there is someone on this site that will talk you through it.
