Title: Mounting SI transducer....could use some guidance
Post by: Helge23 on May 09, 2011, 12:02:14 AM
Hey guys,

I hope some of you could offer help and some guidance. I just received my first SI unit (898c) this past week and I'm looking forward to seeing firsthand what this HB unit can do. Just started planning on how I should properly mount the transducer and I'm not sure if I have the proper clearance. I have attached several pics of my transom that should help to understand what I am dealing with on the install.

Some questions I have are:
1. Does the DI and SI sonar beams come out of the transducer from the entire length of the transducer or the just the middle point or ...?

2. Will the screen inlet for my livewell get in the way of the SI beam? The screen inlet is about 1.5" out from the transom.

I believe I have enough clearance from my outboard but if I find that I don't, I can just trim it up and it should be OK.

Thanks in advance for the help! I do appreciate it.

Helge23; Welcome! From the pix seems to be a real ez instal. The live well filter is well above your xducer install point. I would mount the xducer outboard of the trl bunk 3-5". The motor may need tilting a little. The xducer is full span xmit/rec. Hope this helps a little. post pix after instal.

Hi Roddy,

Thx for the quick reply. I have a question on your recommendation. Do you mean I should mount it 3-5" to the left of the bunk that is showing in the photo? (I attached a marked up photo with a circle in the area that I believe you are referring to). If this is what you mean, wouldn't it be too close to the outboard? I believe the HB instructions says to stay clear of the outboard by 15". If I follow this 15" guideline, it would take the install point at or above the plane of the livewell filter screen.

Thx for your help!

Helge; Nope, place the mount on the other side (right side) of the trl bunk. You can Hot Glue the xducer in place and check for interference. Go real slow 1-2 mph. I have done this on three (3) jon boats it has keep the number of hoies down. Slow speed for 1 or 2 min and get ihe boat out of the water. Let us know how it works for you.

Look into a product like the Sternmate. It is probably 2" in depth and will move the transducer away from the transom so the beam will clear your inlet screen. It also allows for a lot of adjustment of the transducer for the best performance. You would not need to drill any holes. I just installed one on my aluminum deep V (Alumacraft Dominator) and it works very well.
