Title: 1198 Locks On 1.6 ft Depth Readout
Post by: calli1 on April 12, 2011, 10:26:28 PM
I have a brand new 1198...not even one week old.  The unit has and was tested on both Monday and Tuesday ( 4/11-12 ).

On Monday...fished 3 hours with unit....everything good.  On Tuesday, everything good until about the 3rd hour into the day.  My unit....not matter what screen I was on, locked on  1.6ft depth readout.  Every now and then the unit seemed to try and find the correct reading.  Now...as for everything else....it worked fine.  I could see the depth by use of the depth lines or close byt reading still locked on 1.6 ft,

So, I called the fine folks at Humminbird Customer Service ...which they were very nice.  They worked me through 2 restore(s) and one other deal to help my but NO luck at all.  They said the only way was process of elemination.  I had to anchor my boat, take all wires loose and trace transducer wires.  I ru  a 2 transducer system...or did.  I use on top of the S I  Ducer that comes with the unit...I also use the xnt 9 20.  Well....I found the problem without having to send a 4 day old unit back into the alabama shop for repair....I have/had a short either in my leftover "y" cable  AS SIDBY  or my leftover Transducer XNT 9 20 from my 898.  I don't know which one is bad but the problem fixed itself just as soon as I plugged the S I Ducer that comes with the 1198.

So...my question to all of you is....I run a Aluminum 18 ft War eagle...    Can I use the XP 9 20 Shoot through the hull Ducer ?  or should I go back with the xnt 9 20 ?   OR do I need a two Ducer system.

What is the advantages and disadvantages of a single Ducer S I sysem or a 2 Ducer S I system.  Which would best be for me and details.  I know that the xnt 9 20 can be used running.  Also, which temp sensor is used on which Ducer.  Thnaks for your help folks.

Well if you are getting the readings OK with just the original SI transducer then you don't need the dual set up.  The logic in using the two ducer set up is to put the high dollar SI ducer at a safer location on the transom which may sacrifice function while at speed, necessitating the XP 9 20 for depth reading at speed.

I have my SI ducer set under the stepped transom on my Tracker 175 level with the bottom hull in clean water so I get depth readings at speed just fine.  Of course it's exposed to being kicked up or off if I run over log or stump just right.  I made the decision to get best performance from my transducer in exchange for the security of having a "safer" mounting location.  I'm getting great scans in all modes.  Near perfect SI scans to 10mph and usable SI up to 15mph.  In fact it doesn't become unusable until about 20mph.  After that I switch to 2d and map split screen.

Thanks.....I plan to re-order soon but not something I have to have right now.  My S I unit is set about 1 1/2" above the boat line and when most of us are looking for fish, we usually slow down and search anyway.  thanks again.

calli1,
Try testing the AS-Si-DB-Y cable by plugging the HDSi transducer into the “DualBeam” labeled connector.

When using the AS-Si-DB-Y cable the water temperature comes from the transducer plugged into the “Side Imaging” labeled connector.

We don’t make any inside-the-hull transducers that will work reliably inside-the-hull of an aluminum boat.
