Title: Sidescan Problem - Images Added
Post by: fitz1fitz2 on March 24, 2011, 12:52:10 AM
I just got a 798 and am experiencing a mirror image effect on sidescan.  I'm getting signal from both sides blended together and displayed on each side.  I have tried all speeds and pulling my engine out of the water to no effect.  I have lowered the transducer 1/2" below the bottom of the boat.  I have reduced sidescan sensitivity and can see that one mirror image is more solid but I can't make the weaker disappear.  My boat is a 1650 flat bottom and my engine is set back on a hydraulic jack plate.  I also tend to lose side and downscan in water under 10'.  Thanks for any suggestions!

fitz,

Welcome tot he forum.  If you can, please take a snapshot of the problem you are seeing and post here for us to take a look at.  You may also want to post some images of your transdcuer installation to make sure you there is nothing reflecting back the sonar signal.

Does it happen ALL the time and has it always done this?  What depths do you typically work in?

I get this effect in small creeks where the sonar signal bounces off the sides and reflects back off the surface of the the water.  You will see a strong signal on one side and a mirror image weaker signal on the other.

Ok, the installation looks good.  Do you have anyone with a Side Imaging unit on their boat that you could hook yours up to?  Basically need to determine if its the unit or the transducer.

If not, I would get on the phone with Humminbird and see about getting it taken care of.  I would send both the unit and the transducer.  If you need it immediately, they will do advanced replacement if you pay for it, and then they will refund your unit when they recieve the damaged one.

Good Luck,

Robert

Fitz; I would try puting a sheet of cork on the top of the xducer.
This may stop reflectide signal from the metal boat hull.  Roddy

Could your motor be blocking the right signal when trimmed all the way down? Just a thought.
