I am thinking of getting a new 898 SI HD unit as an upgrade from my current 777c2. My questions are: 1. can I place transducer on my trolling motor? 2. What extra's will I need ( map card/ SD card and what size memory is best)? 3. Will a new unit come out of box with newest software or will i have to go online and upgrade software? 4. Are the settingd fairly easy to "tweek"?
thanks for all info

1-yes 2-map card of the area you are most likely going to fish,SD card Sand Disk extremeIII 8gig 30mb/sec is what i use.3-unit may not have the newest update when you register your unit on line the newest update will be in your account .4- The HB'S are very easy to use and set between this forum and the BBC forum and HB
support you have all the resource you need to learn how to use your equipment. Gary

The specs listed in the other thread showed the peak power to be 4000 watts peak to peak, but I looked on universalmania.com and basspro magizine, the same unit specs show peak to peak power to be 8000 watts.
What gives? And can anyone explain this concept?

I believe to get 8000 watts you need a different transducer then what comes with your unit...It should say something in the manuals you can download from HB

is there a place to go to help interpret the images. I mean, the dark column is under boat equal to the depth? the lighter colors on sides, what area in water column is that representing?
I know this may seem elementary, but just wanna get a basic grasp at what im seeing before I dive in.

Tommy,
Image interpretation is very important with Side Imaging. I would recommend that you browse the image gallery and snapshots forum. If you would like, post some images or ask about ones here on the forum and we can help.

The dark area in the center is the water column under your boat and it's the past history going from top to bottom on the screen.
The wider the water column shown the deeper the water. If you go across a deep river channel you will see the dark area widen which represents the deep water channel of the river and then it will narrow again as you come up on the shelf. Hope that answers your question.
With the new units and the newe firmware updates you can disable the water column and only show the bottom in SI mode. And you can also add distance lines to both sides of the SI display. That way you know approx how far away an object is by comparing the object to the distance lines on the display view in SI mode.
