Title: GPS update speed?
Post by: LMH Steel on March 03, 2011, 07:49:48 AM
At what speed does the GPS update your position? I am asking because I use it on the front unit looking at waypoints trying to keep the boat positioned to know precisely the direction to throw. Right now I switch between SI and the map screen constantly until I find it with the SI. Not that it is a big deal just curious as to what rate of speed it should update and if there is a difference when moving or just using the TM. I would probably use split screen but I only have a 997 at the front and the screen is not big enough to me for split screen. I am now seriously considering updating the front to another 1197 or 1198 whichever I would have to get.

well, depending on your setup, it will update the unit 4 * per second.  if you have the gps receiver connected directly to the unit then you'll get this higher rephresh rate.  if it's hooked up to the interlink then you will only get 1 per second.

I read on the web that the boat icon only shows up on the map view to show your boat's direction if you are going 1.0 to 2.0 mph or faster.

Some guys say that the boat icon will dissappear when you are going around 0.6 mph or less.

To really get an accurate reading of your direction of travel you should be going fast enough to move far enough for the unit to calculate your location at each point in time.  Remember that the accuracy of these GPS units are limited to plus or minus 3 meters or ten feet 95% of the time.   So you must move at least ten feet or more in a second before they can ACCURATELY predict your direction of travel with precision.
