Title: Knob for a 1198
Post by: Sigler on March 01, 2011, 01:04:47 AM
I cant get nothing to go right so far. My buddy tightened the knobs down so tight I had to use a pair a pliers to get one of them loose and I ripped the rubber on the knob. Where is the cheapest place to buy 1 knob. Humminbird wants 11.99 and then 10.00 for shipping.

Really!  Let me check tomorrow and see if I have one from my 997.  I am pretty sure I have 2 still in the box.

Glad Robert has a spare. ;D....
Nothing magical about the knobs unless you just want the look.
We have had knobs wear over time and we use a metric screw in place of the knob.
We put a thick rubber washer next to the unit, then put a nut on the screw then thread the screw into the unit until gently snug.
Then we tighten the nut, GENTLY and the whole thing is firmly mounted.
cost about 80 cents USD.
Just dont overtighten screw or nut.

So is there a difference in the 900 serious knobs and the 1100 serious?

I know I have them somewhere, but cant put my hands on them.  They are the same knobs as the 1100 series.  I found some others that fit, but they are shaped different than the HB ones.

If looks are not important just use the screw and nut from a local hardware store.  very cheap and they work as well if not better than the knobs..
Robert will probably find where he put his spares so give him a fishing lure and he will probably send you the knobs... ;D.. ::)... :D

The only reason I asked is because I called Humminbird and a lady said they were different. I could see them being different so I thought I would ask.

Sonar I just want what came on it that's all.

I had to remount that transducer again I hope and pray its in the right spot. I just paid to have the wrong holes fixed. Its on the lowest part of the boat I could mount it to. I have my fingers crossed it will work right and no interference. Thanks to all of you for helping me out! Now if they come up with a fix for that interlink so I can use it.

The lady at Humminbird was right: the mounting knobs for the 900 and 1100 series are different.  The 900 series knobs use a 1/4 - 20  thread and the 1100 series units are 5/16 – 18 thread.

Well that answers that then!  I couldnt find them anyway.  I have a whole cabinet dedicated to my Humminbird stuff and did not see any knobs.

Check out this web site for a replacement knob for your unit.  It's not only a nice looking knob that will fit property but it will help to secure and protect your expensive investment from thief.

www.durasafe.com (http://www.durasafe.com/)   if that does not work then try the following web site:

http://www.durasafe-usa.com/index.html (http://www.durasafe-usa.com/index.html)

I own one of these durasafe locks for my Humminbird 898 cSI unit but I probably need another lock for the other side.

Also if you have a RAM ball mount for your depth finder you may wish to secure that as well.  If not someone can unscrew the ball friction knob and steal your fish finder unit from your boat easily.

I just ordered one today.  Been wanting to get one since last year but just figured out where to buy this thing today.

Here's a direct link to the locking knobs that fits three different sizes of the RAM Mounts.
