Title: 798 Ci SI Transducer issues?
Post by: skeeter92 on February 28, 2011, 04:07:03 PM
Hello, I just purchased a 798 CI SI and will be doing the installation soon. I have read more than once on a number of reviews that there seems to be considerable issues with the transom mounted transducer getting broken off if your boat exceeds 60+ mph or if your in rough water. I have a 92 skeeter with a setback at the back of the boat where the live well intakes and plug are. The instructions show this transducer CAN NOT be mounted as 'shoot thru hull' so it would be protected from rough water or knocked off while fishing in timber

Does anyone have any best practices or lessons learned I can leverage so I don't get mine busted off..

I would suggest you look into possibly installing the 798’s transducer off the jackplate or next to the motor and install a second transducer (XP-9-20 inside-the-hull DualBeam transducer) inside-the-hull and add an AS-Si-DB-Y cable to connect both transducers to the 798 unit.  This will help protect the 798’s transducer while allowing for the best possibility of high-speed depth readings as well.

Thanks for the reply, I did see a photo in the gallery where the transducer was mounted under the jackplate but was not sure if that was an optimal location. Also I'm not as concerned about the sonar image at running speed only at idle or while fishing. Watching sonar at running speed is like driving a car and texting seems like opportunity for accidents. What would the extra Y cable and shoot thru hull transducer cost? already stretching budget to get the device and would like the map chip also... thanks again for the great reply.

Less than $80 bucks.  Try some of the online retailers.  They will have a little lower pricing than the HB site.
