My 898ci screen gets a lot of smudges and is very hard to clean with a dry cloth.
From the factory do they come with one of those clear plastic covers that is supposed to be removed before use?
Is windex the only/best way to clean the screen?

Windex multi surface with vinegar is the cleaner you want to use
There is screen savers out there I tried one but didn't care for it.
I keep a small bottle of windex with micro fibre cloths in the boat.

FWIW: I use the recommended vinegar based cleaner. But, with an unprotected screen it sometimes takes multiple cycles to get the water spots, etc off. I bring it inside, and flush with distilled water. I have "hard" well water, so that is why the use of distilled, or at least for the last rinse. It required multiple cleanings before I felt it was clean enough to add a screen protector. (I would have to check on brand) There is very slight degredation in screen brightness/clarity. I Accept that over the inevitable screen getting scratched. I can't tell you how many times people will poke the screen with their finger, brushed with a foot, or contact from tackle. Cleaning seems easier with the protective film.

monto; dont spray the windex directly onto the screen.spray the fiber cloth then wipe the screen,works really good. {if you spray the windex directly onto the screen it will leave what looks like water spots,there hard to get off}dont worry if you already did this and have these spots on the screen.just take the unit out of its mount and hold it in your hands so you can apply a little pressure while you clean them off.after you get them off just clean like i suggested and you wont have any more problems with cleaning. P.S. never touch the screen with your finger,if you do,just as well get your fiber cloth out with windex and wipe it off or just look at big finger smudge all day. good luck. dont worry about scratching it either ive had mine going on three years.mine still looks new.

fuzzy; you posted while i was typeing, your probaly rite about the screen protector .that would be better.

The larger the screen, the easier the target, when it come to mishaps.
While I haven't scratched my 798 or 797, it has been a constant worry (before the screen protector added). I do allot of fishing on a river that has mud banks at the launches. You almost always get some on your boots and then on the deck. It drys out and you start to get dust devils at higher running speeds. Also easy to get dirt/grit on finger which then could easily scratch screen.
