Dr.Depth works online with HB Units.
But it seems to me that the NMEA Sentences didn't come much quickly out of the Unit.
Dr.Depth is set to 4800Baud, which is the default NMEA baudrate.
Is there any Way to use a higher baudrate with HB Units ?
If i try so set Dr.Depth to more than 4800, close the connection and contact again, i see no data in Dr.Depth from the HB Unit.
Inside the menu of the HB Unit, i couldn't saw an Option to increase the baudrate ?
----------------------------
Found an interesting thing:
While playing a record in Demo Mode Dr. Depth gets GPS Info's from the record because the HB Unit send it out, like it should do so.
While playing a record in normal Mode (witout receiving a Sat.) the HB Unit sends no GPS Info from the Record to the PC with Dr.Depth running.
Could this happend because the GPS Section in the HB Unit could not initialize because at home it couldn't receive a satellite ?
At this Stage i couldn't check if the HB unit sends GPSdata from an Record when it is receiving Signals from Sat's. an has initialized the GPS Section.
Did anyone has more experience with that ?
Thx.

Hi Pebe
The baud rate you are setting has nothing to do with how often the HB is sending out data.
The baud rate is the rate that data bytes are sent on the 'serial' connection that you to connect the HB and the computer. The sender and receiver must be set to the same, what is why you dont get anything if you change the baudrate in DrDepth.

Hi again
According to this http://www.humminbird.com/support/FAQ.aspx?faqid=32 (http://www.humminbird.com/support/FAQ.aspx?faqid=32) the NMEA output is sent once per second. It sounds like it cannot be changed.

Thank you,
i now this since using a 300baud Acoustic Telephone Connector in the 80īs for connecting through BBS Systems ;D
Your Link to the HB Site is helpful.
Reading this makes me asking, Did they mean only the depth-Record every Second ?
Or the whole package (including GPS Data) every second ?
Because the send a few more records than only the depth record.
I will try to check the amount of time for one whole record compilation coming to the PC.
I saw it took more than one second till the next revolving depth record is coming out, so
i looks(feels) a little bit slow in DrDepth and i hoped it might be a solution to increase the output with an hided option ;D.
After reading this and after i found no entry in den Menu, it seems that HB sets the maximun output fix because they don't support the new NMEA 0183-HS (Version 1.0) Standard which comes up to 38400 baud.
Perhaps they might be afraid that the 4800 baud Connection is to slow for a higher output interval.
Oh, i just remember that the fastest Trackpoint interval in the menu is adjustable at 1 second / 1 meter.
So this could be the limitation also.
So i have to deal with that and drive at a lower speed to get more Records for more details in dr depth.

i hope i don't missunderstood something :)

As far as I know. the gps satellites sent out a signal every second, so it does not make much sense to go below that. but correct me if I am wrong.

Will Dr. Depth produce similar results as bathymetric surveying? I do most my learning and research independently. I found this article on methodology interesting, http://www.uwec.edu/hartnesg/SeanWeb/BATHMAP/Bmap.html (http://www.uwec.edu/hartnesg/SeanWeb/BATHMAP/Bmap.html)
however, it was based on older units without current updated features. :P
I am looking to conduct mapping of Missouri river system in my area. I understand most the features with Dr. depth software program and was wondering if this will produce adequate results.
Thanks

Dr Depth will produce good maps. Dont know your budget but 3DF will produce bathymetric and 3d displays as well as other informaiton. check www.3dfmaps.com (http://www.3dfmaps.com) for comparable pricing. We use the 3df for mapping purposes and find it is very easy and accurate. for the price it beats DrDepth for our needs. Chuck

Hooked up unit 798si with Internal GPS to laptop. Ran 'GPS Port Checker' program and no luck locating unit. Connected with serial to usb cable. Any ideas? Want to test the Dr Depth for real time time data.
Testing the connections from the PC and from DrDepth
I used these instructions from DD website. http://www.drdepth.se/ex_cguide.php?l=gb (http://www.drdepth.se/ex_cguide.php?l=gb)

Did you set the unit's NMEA output to on?
If not press the menu button twice, choose the settings tab and scroll down to NMEA out. Then use the cursor button to set the NMEA output to on.

press the menu button twice, choose the settings tab and scroll down to NMEA out
I tried this. There is no NMEA option listed in any of the menus??? :-\
Never mind. I got it now. A few more steps. I guess I should have read the above thread first. Thanks for the assist.
