I just noticed there is a new software download version 5.210 which fixes Lakemaster related bugs in zooming. As I'm in Australia and can't utilise the Lakemaster feature on my unit, is it still worth me downloading the newer version? Mark

Unless you are having issues, I would say no, not right now.

I never download a newer version until I've watched the SI boards for a while to see what "new" bugs people are experiencing with new software versions...
Then I decide if the possible bugs are worth the probable fixes....

That is probably the safest way to go too. Right now I suspect (only two cases have been reported that I know of), but have not heard anything “official” yet; that there may be an issue with the 5.210 software and using the unit with an InterLink accessory. So until we hear otherwise; I would not load the 5.210 software if your unit is InterLinked.
Now just because they may have listed fixes for one thing, there may be other enhances that were not documented. So sometimes you don’t know what you are missing until you install the latest update.

Hi guys,
I tried the new update on my 998c to see what was new and exciting w/ this release. I noted that there was a reference to an IP/MAC Address display and an option to turn on "distance lines" (or something like that) on the Side Imaging screen. I checked the "connected interface" view and there was no reference to the Ethernet port - although there are some rumor's that this release was activating that feature. What I did see was that the new release file size was about 2Meg larger than 4.97 and that (after the install), the boot up time ("Loading" time from power on to the Menu prompt) was ALOT slower than w/ 4.97. What I was praying to see was the release of the "Much Talked About" Waypoint Management Feature - alas, it was not there. Since I do not have (at this time!) a second box that has an Ethernet interface to connect to and it’s is ice fishing time here in MN - I'm using my 998c as a mapping box only (the unit is sitting on the truck dash - you should see it, really neat!), I backed out 5.21 and returned to 4.97 level. To me 5.21 looks to be like an interim release. Here's hopping something better is soon coming down the pipe!
Just a thought.
Take care,
Roger

Roger,
I'd really like to see a picture of your unit on the dash board of your truck, hehe.
Did people ask you what this is all about?

Per Release notes for 798ci:
798ci SI Combo Update (version 5.210)
Description:
12/6/2010 12:00:00 AM - v5.210 This release includes changes for Down Imaging, SI Terrain Mode, SI Navigation, Custom Chart Menu, and Downrigger fixes
Outside of the downrigger fixes, I would like to know more specific details, if anyone has them.

Hi Jolly Roger (aka Harry)
At the risk of taking this tread on a slight detour, I'd like to respond to Harry's request to show off my 998c setup as a truck mapping box and my 797c setup as a portable sonar box (IE. Humminbird's setup for "Hard water" fishing).
This first picture are my Humminbird's setup to use for the Minnesota ice fishing season.[attachment=1]
This second picture is of my 998c setting on the dash of my Chevy truck. I decided to set this unit up as a mapping box this winter to take advantage of the 2011 LakeMaster MN and 2010 Navionics Platinum North chips when I’m putting around our Northern lakes looking for someplace to fish.
[attachment=2]
My Humminbird brag is about my 797c setup for ice fishing. This unit can track a #10 Gill Pill (a popular local ice fishing bait for catching Pan fish and Perch) EASILY at the bottom of a 32 feet water column. The Gill Pill bait is about half the size of an eraser tip. I use the narrow 20 Deg cone exclusively. The 60 Deg cone is worthless at depths greater that 10 feet.
Take care,
Roger

FWIW: The 798ci bin file for 5.210 was only 98K bytes larger than 4.960. The 5.210 is 3,019KB total.

John S,
Not sure what all of those changes are as yet.
I believe that the Si Terrain is a new menu option that is a feature that some on this and other web sites has wanted – but I won’t say anything beyond that for now. ;)
From one of the new unit manuals I found:
“SI Navigation controls how the boat icon is displayed in Side Imaging® Views. If SI Navigation is turned on, the boat icon indicates the direction the boat needs to turn to reach the next waypoint during navigation. The boat icon color will also change to orange.
If SI Navigation is turned Off, the boat icon will not change during navigation although you can still mark waypoints and start navigation from a Side Imaging® View.”
