Title: tilt up transducer loose

All three plate screws are tight as well as all the others. the transducer still wiggles a bit, which I would imagine could hinder performance.

I womder if putting a rubber "bumper" in there would tighten it up?

Maybe its not even a problem.

Right Bill,
it is indeed no problem. The transducer needs some play in its bracket in order to be able to kick up if it hits something in the water. So the the wiggle is nothing unusual. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE SCREWS!!!

The transducer will be stable in the bracket when the waterpressure pushes it against its rear rest while driving. It will not be hindered in the performance.

This question is not new, a lot of people had wondered about it.

A different issue might be the rooster tail that might occur when on higher speed. This is caused by the gap between the transducer and the bracket. The water which passes through there is deflected by the upper part of the transducer housing and then pushed up. Might be annoying if the roostertail will reach into your boat or on your outboard. In that case, just call Humminbird support and ask for a rubber piece that will fit in the gap and close it. I  heard that this rubber thing is already part of the mounting hardware, but I haven't seen it with my transducers.

That roostertail piece is only for the smaller CSi transducer that the 798 uses.  I believe that MonteSS just installed a 898c Si unit which would have the larger HDSi transducer.  We do not make a plug for that transducer but he could plug that same area with something, although we have not heard many complaints from the HDSi transducer causing this.

The transducer wiggle is normal and is needed for the kick-up feature as Harry stated.  Some still do not like it and have installed a rubber piece forwards and between the transducer and its metal bracket.  This will not hurt the kick-up feature and can keep the transducer from moving.  Just don’t over do it or the transducer will kick-up more easily.
