Hi all :)
So we now know the 1198 will have full ethernet capabilities to be single cable linked to other ethernet capable sounders.
Any news if the 1197 will have an update to do the same?

Sometime in January, the software is supposed be released to activate the ethernet port on all equipped units.

Wayne,
I still haven't got it yet: What's the big benefit to have an "Ethernet" connection? ???
Is this a faster connection or can I get other stuff hooked up that one cannot hook up to the unit yet?
I always wondered about this Ethernet stuff and it would be great if you would explain the wonders of it to me ;)
Thanks in advance
Harry

DaveW,
When the software for the 1197 (and other units that already have the Ethernet port) is released; it should have the same Ethernet capabilities as the 1198.
Harry,
The advantage of an Ethernet port is in the amount of data that can be sent back and forth over it. Humminbird may allow additional accessories to be connected to your Humminbird unit (or the other way around) but nothing official has been stated yet. To begin with they have stated: Waypoints, GPS data and Sonar. So far though the specifics on what sonar data can be sent from one unit to another has not been defined. I imagine that once the Ethernet communications are turned on that we will start seeing regular software updates that added more functionality for the Ethernet function.

Thanks Greg!
That helps a lot

Sounds good - guess that means I'll have to ditch the 797 off the bow and get something with Ethernet!

The new 798ci HD Si unit would be the replacement for the 797, that is unless you want something larger like the 898c Si. ;D This is the same as the original 798c Si unit that replaced the 797 except that it has an Ethernet connection and it is an internal GPS unit (but can use an external GPS Receiver).
