Look at the offer! Nice, isn't it! May it already be a 2011' 798ci HD with Ethernet or they are not in stores yet?

The described unit is the 2011 edition of the 798.
I am guessing that, like the Humminbird website, the sale description does not match what is actually available.
There are a lot of errors in unit descriptions for Humminbird products by retailers and the mfg.

So, you admit that it is described like 2011 edition (but i can see no evidence of that except "HD" abbreviation! Is there someting else in the description that looks loke 2011 edition?) but in fact the product is 2010?
PS As far as i know 2011 edition is only available as a pre-order for January 2011.

Call Cabelas and ask what unit is on sale and do they have it in stock now.
If they have it in stock ask them to read the description on the box to you.
Ask for a serial number as a reference.
The unit serial number has the mfg date in the first part of it.

example: 2010, June 15 would be 100615XX-XXXX with the "X" being the rest of the serial number

I just called Cabela's and they said this is the 2010 model ???.

It would have really been an amazing price on the 2011.  I told them they needed to change the description of the item because the 798 was not called HD in 2010 and it migh it be considered false advertising >:(.

I had decided to buy the 898, but would have changed my mind if I could get the 2011 798 at this price.

Hoping someone will have a black friday sale on the 898.

Bob, check with Three Rivers Marine Electronics. They are having a sale on Friday-no particular units or prices are advertized.

You might also call John at    http://www.jandhproducts.com/ (http://www.jandhproducts.com/)    1-571-281-5284

They have several distribution centers and he may be able to track down a 2011 model for you...

Well, I decided the $699 price for the 798ci si was too good a deal to pass up, even if it is the 2010 without ethernet.....maybe I'll be able to afford a bigger unit by the time Humminbird develops applications for the ethernet.  (A Macbook for my daughter took priority for available funds. :'()

Sale is there til the 30th.

Good deal, Bob. If I didn't already have SI, I would have purchased two of them.

Incidently, today on Bass Boat Central, someone said they called and were told the 2011 798ci SI HD model was included in the $699 sale.
Cabelas needs to get their stories straight.

It seems there is still a lot of confusion about the new "HD" designation of the 2011 model units.....some thinking that the "HD" in the model number is going to be a better unit than a 2010 model with no "HD" in the model number.....

New potential HB customers should come to  realize that the 2011 model HB units do not utilize a "better resolution" just because the model now has a "HD" in the number...

This is just my opinion (and you'd never get HB to admit it...But)....I feel that HB felt like they were losing some sales to Lowrance just because Lowrance has "HD" in their model numbers and HB did not.....which might make some potential customers to sway toward Lowrance over HB just because they would think the Lowrance's "HD" moniker would give better images....

That sounds reasonable. Marketing is half of the business....

Well, I thought I had one of the $699 units ordered from Cabelas, but there was a screw up on the order and when I found out and tried to straighten it out today they are all gone and Cabelas won't honor my order. >:(

After going thru 3 customer service people, they say they are all gone and can't be ordered because they are obsolete units on a closeout. :'(

This pretty much tells me the ones they are shipping are the 2010 units.

I used a debit card for the order.  Didn't find out til too late there is a max purchase amount that was smaller than the order............plenty in the account, there is just a limit per purchase.

If I had found out in time I could have put it on another card, but Cabelas didn't notify me of the problem.  Only found out too late when I called in to see why I didn't get an order confirmation email.

Free overnight shipping,  :D :D :D should have it tomorrow.

Made sure I didn't get @!@! by a spending limit. ;)

I am sure to have a gazillion question when I get it even though I have been reading a lot.  Got a lot of winter left to do simulations.

Thanks Wayne.

I have been following the Humminbird forum on Bass Boat Central.  That is where I found out about BBC Marine.  Haven't been to the Yahoo forum yet, but will have to check that out.......No such thing as too much info.

I have been considering a swing arm mount that I can swivel around to see the 1197 from the front as well as the console.  I have a tiller style kicker also that I haven't yet tied to the main motor for steering.  May have to do that, otherwise I will have 3 positions try to get set up for viewing.

Title: 798c HD vs 798c SI
Post by: Rusty2283 on January 31, 2011, 05:07:03 PM
Guys, i recently purchased the Humminbird 798c SI Sonar GPS+WASS Charplotter Combo, Is there much difference in the 798c HD SI Sonar GPS+WASS Charplotter Combo? I know it is only a 5 inch screen so it should make much difference right? Reason why i ask is im hoping i didnt make a mistake not getting the HD. Any help will be great. ( I was also told from bass pro this version i bought was new and i am hearing rumors that it is being discontiued? ) Only bought it two weeks ago. Or would you guys recommend me going with the 788ci HD DI model instead, so i can get the HD model while staying in the same price range.

The 798c si is the 2010 and earlier version of the 798.  The 798c hd si is the 2011 version.

The only real difference in the two is that the 2011 version has an ethernet port that the 2010 and previous year models did not have.  This ethernet port will be used to connect multiple units together, so if you only plan to have one unit, it wll not be an issue.  (The 2010 and earlier units could still be interconnected but required and additional device call an interlink.)

There is no difference in screen resolution.  Both are 640x640.  In technical terms, both model are HD, it just wasn't called that before.  The HD in the 2011 model is just a marketing name change to indicate the 798 resolution is as good as the competition which calls it's units HD.

It depends on what BP was referring to when they called it new.  It may be a new unit, but it is not the new model unless it includes HD in the name on the box.

The 788 model would not include side imaging and the resolution wouldn't be any better.
