Hi, it is true that the model 798c SI can also operate in HD?
What should I do to change it?
thanks

stan30,
The “HD” designation is being added to the name of the 798 units but nothing has changed with these units. They still use the same display and I know of no changes to the sonar. We are just using the “HD” designation to show that the 640 x 640 LCD we are (and have been) using in these products offers more definition, due to the number of pixels, than some of our other color products and also more than the competition uses. We should have been using this designation since we started manufacturing the 798’s and 788’s with this display two years ago but I guess no one thought of it than.
The only way to get better Si sonar definition on a 798 unit that I know of would be to use one of the larger and more expensive HDSi transducers with it.

The HD models mount Transducer XHS-9-HDSI-180-T.
It's good for 798, or else to make some changes?
-
The 798c HD Si units do not come with the XHS-9-HDSi-180-T transducer. They come with the Compact Side Imaging (CSi) XNT-9-Si-180-T transducer. Again; the "HD" designation does not have anything to do with sonar, just the display.
The 798 units can use the XHS-9-HDSi-180-T transducer though and should give increases sonar resolution. The problem with doing this is that you may not notice the increased resolution due to the small display of the 798 unit. Most do see the difference but not all do.

So is the display that makes the difference, I understand.
But if I mount the HD transducer, and I register the sea bed.
After, I watch on PC, can I see the difference?
-
Stan, re-read Greg's explaination S-L-O-W-L-Y.
There is no HD in function, just a model number change.
Changing the transducer to the HDSI gives you a longer crystal for the SI frequencies and that results in a slightly sharper produced image. No settings are involved.
I used my 798ci SI for about 9 months with the supplied Compact SI transducer and when I changed to the HDSI transducer, I noticed the increased image sharpness. You may or may not notice it. I added the HDSI transducer as a remedy for trolling motor interference when I use the 798 on the boat bow, and it solved it. I still use the Compact SI transducer when I have the 798 on my console.
The new 1198 is getting HD in it's model number, but the function and resolution is the same as the 1197.

So is the display that makes the difference ...
The resolution in the PC you can not improve? :-\

Stan, the 798 screen resolution is 640 pixels X 640 pixels and that is the maximum image size and the maximum file size. You can display that image on a larger computer screen, but all you get is a spread out pixel image of the same number of pixels. It's not unlike digital zooming with a digital camera. You only have X number of pixels to work with and enlarging the image will just make it look less sharp.
On the unit screen, all those pixels are contained in the 5" diagonal display so it looks very sharp at that size. Some other units have a 480 pixel X 480 pixel or less display in the 5" diagonal size and don't look as sharp as the higher pixel count displays.
Copy this image to your computer, then show it full screen or larger, and you will see for yourself.

I'm impressed !

newkid4si, I'm not, LOL.
I used this site to find out what the Italian message was and had my response translated.

Nice web site Wayne, I’ll have to bookmark that one. I’ll keep my reply in English (or whatever passes for English down here in Alabama!).
Stan, watch comparing the 798 to the other brand’s images as many of them are from a different frequency (800kHz) which the 798 is not capable of producing. Also they use a larger transducer as well which is about the same size as they ones we have been making for years now. So for more of an apples-to-apples comparison you would need to use an 898, 998, or 1107 unit. Using the larger HDSi transducer will help as will working with boat speed, transducer installation and the menu settings in your 798.

That's OK ! Your still my hero for proving good info to the many questions ask.

I' do not know about you, but I'm not happy of the resolution of my 798.
I cannot distinguish the objects well.
I have seen Lowrance with lss1, another planet.
Stan , I'm italian as you are and I can guarantee you that there's no challenge.
Humminbird has a too much better resolution.
Try to set the right resolution of your 798 and you will see that.
then set Lowrance at the same way. I have already done it.
The problem of we italian guys is that we are not able to use fishfinders as american guys do.
