hi i have notice that the gps will give a speed reading when tied on to a pontoon, the reading is variable 0.1-0.8 mph, is there some way to smooth the reading?
-
Are you saying it will give you this reading when standing still?
Which GPS reciever do you have? GR16, GR50 ?
It is very common for the unit to fluctuate a little and will jump around if it doesn't have a good gps lock. The GR16 was known to do this, but the GR50 should be much more stable.

when this is happening go to your diagnostic screen (GPS diagnostic view) and look at where and how many satelites are on your receiver. It will give those with lock on and those without lockon , check the little bar beside the icon. Check the location on the horizon and see if there are any obstruction in line with reception. Check to see if your fix is 2d, 3d or enhanced.

Is there any blockage of the signal? Like chuck said, check the diagnostic screen and see how many satelites are locked in.
