Title: Setup advice recommendations
Post by: Spnb8 on June 23, 2010, 12:25:01 PM
I joined this forum a short while back while I was debating whether to go H'bird or Lowrance for new electronics on my TR20. Based on what I've read here; a long chat with Greg while visiting Eufaula, and advice from a good friend who is a H'birder I've made up my mind as to brand.
I think I've also decided on the units and setup but I'd like to run it by you pro's for comment and/or advice:
At the console on a RAM mount a 998c Combo interlinked with a 788i Combo in the bow. I would have the SI transducer on the transom and a thru-hull puck in the bilge for high speed. I would have the standard 'ducer on the t-motor and receive waypoints up front via the interlink. I will leave my Lowrance X510c in the dash as a backup depth reading unit. The components I think I need to buy include the 998 and 788 along with a RAM mount, Y-cable, interlink, through hull transducer. Anything else?
Also: recommendations for a reliable installer near North Alabama or Central Tennessee.

Any and all comments/suggestions appreciated.

That's the same set up I have on my boat, except for the thru-hull.  You will like that set up.

I have the same set-up except I have a 898 si and a 788 ci on the bow.  My 2d transducer is mounted on the transom.  It works fine even at high speeds (70 mph +).  The SI transducer is mounted on the jackplate.  If you have a jackplate, I would mount si transducer on the jackplate.  The units are interlinked.  The units and interlink have worked flawlessly.

One known problem was shallow water digital readings.  The graphs showed the correct depth.  However, the digital readouts went haywire sometimes.  There is a new software update for both units that should fix the problem.  I have not updated my units to know if the fix worked.  Hopefully someone will post the results of the software update.

I had garmin and lowrance units.  I am glad that I made the switch.  The HB units are great and the HB customer service is outstanding.
