Title: Happy Newbie ......Sorta
Post by: unpaulie on May 10, 2010, 12:21:44 PM
Well after a ton of research and pondering, I pulled the trigger on a couple new Humminbirds. A 798 for the console and a 788 for the bow with the interlink. Very impressed thus far....Only one small problem....The transducer is creating a race boat style rooster tale. I think I have it narrowed down to placemnet issue (too low) and the gap between the mount the transducer. I have a deep v alluminum boat and I did not like drilling the holes the first time....So I picked up another product called Sternmate. I will let you know how it goes after the install and test.

unpaulie,

Welcome to the forum.  There should have been a rubber plug in your box to go on the transducer to help keep the rooster tail down.

If not, you can call HB and they should send you one out.

Good Luck and post some install picts for us and some snapshots.

Robert

Thanks for the information.

I looked throught the box and found the rubber piece. I am pretty sure the transducer is still to low. I have included some pics. Since I have a deep v it is hard to judge how low or high to mount[attachment=1][attachment=2]

If it works than it can’t be “too low”.  Maybe lower than it needs to be but the only way to tell would be to raise it up and see if it works as well at higher boat speeds.

I am more concerned with what looks to be too much of an angle on the transducer when viewed from the side.  In the second picture it looks like the back end of the transducer is much lower than it needs to be.  Ideally you want the bottom ‘face’ of the transducer to be parallel with the surface of the water while the boat is underway.  Hard to do with a boat that may be more bow up at some speeds than others so you will just have to pick an angle that’s best for your use all around.  Some have to lower the back end of the transducer to be able to get readings at high speeds though.

Thanks for the information. I learned the back was to low after reading many posts. I am remounting slightly higher to correct the rooster tale issue. My hope is by mounting higher and installing the rubber plug will ellimnate the rooster tail and creat great imaging.
