Title: Nothing happens
Post by: Lasse on May 05, 2010, 03:31:49 PM
I have a 797c unit with program version 3.460.
I have tried to upgrade to version 4.770, I downloaded the program, did exactly as the video described. But when I  power up the 797 and put  the SD card in the slot ,  nothings happens.
When I download the file I am told to open the file with VLC media .
Could this be the problem ?

Hello Lasse and welcome to the forum!

You don't have to open the file with any program. Just download and SAVE the file on your computer.
If you have the SD card reader attached to your computer and the SD card in you can even save the file directly on the SD card by choosing the card as the place where to save it.

Hope this helps

Hello Harry.

I have not tried to open the file whit VLC. Its just that when i download the file its automatically called "vlc media file bin file". I don't know if it makes any diffrents. But somethings wrong.  Ive tried all sorts of ways to start the unit an insert my card but, nothing happens! Does the transducer and antenna need to be connected when you upgrade ?
Thanks for helping.

No, you do not need to have the transducer or gps connected.  Make sure you have the right file.  For example, the 798c cannot be updated with the 798ci file.  If you downloaded the update from here, you need to make sure its correct for your unit.

If you registered your unit with humminbird, you can go to the Humminbird website and always find the latest update for your unit.

Good Luck,

Robert

Also make sure that the 797c unit is recognizing the SD card that you are using by making taking a successful screen snapshot.

When a got home i took a new SD card and the same program i have in my PC and this time i could update my own 797!
Strange things do happen.

Im having a similar problem, I tried to update my unit and nothing happens (reset to factory defaults, put in card with download software from both this website and registered at HB), I tried 3 different SD cards (64MB, 1MB, etc), Any suggestions, Im about to throw the unit out of the garage haha

works2much,

Welcome to the forum.

What is the file name of the software on the SD card?

Also, you have to make sure it is not in any folder on the card.  When you open up the SD card drive, it should be in the root directory.

As Greg suggested a few post above, make sure your unit is recognizing the SD card by taking a snapshot.

I will try that once I get home.  I noticed my software version is like 3.4 or something, and Ive read that some of the earlier versions don't take SD cards and I will need a MMC card, does this ring a bell?

Well, it will take SD cards, but not SDHC cards.  Try a small SD card like 512 or something.  Once you get to 2gb, they are usually SDHC format.  This may be your issue.

Did you try a smaller SD card less than 2gb?

Yeah, I had a 64 MB card and it wouldn't pick that up either, I got it sent off today so we'll see what they say.  Thanks again for the help!
