Title: 797 and 798 vs 800 900 1100's
Post by: eric3338 on May 02, 2010, 10:21:42 PM
just noticed today that the 700 series only has 3 freq's  on the transducer  the others have 4  2 down for the cones and it has 2 for the SI.  can anyone show me the difference in the picture of the 2 units?  I am thinking that I am not getting the whole picture.  I was under the Idea that they was all the same except for the screen size.  Am I wrong.

No, the 800 series and up come with the HDSI (Hi-Def) transducer.  It has the addition of 800khz which has a thinner beam angle and gives better detail on the SI Images.  However, the downsaide of the higher frequency is a reduction in range.

Also the transducer is largeer and the 455khz images on the HDSI transducers are just a little better than the 455khz on the Compact SI with the 700 series.

Hope that helps.

Can the transducer be upgraqded on my 797?  Or would I have to upgrade the whole unit?   I know someone with the 900's and he is telling me of stuff I don't see.

Yes and No.
Yes in that you can buy the HDSi transducer that the 997/998, 898 and 1197 uses and you will see slightly sharper 455kHz Si images.
No in that simply connecting this transducer up will allow your 797 to use the 800kHz Si frequency.  It cannot as it does not have the circuitry of software to do this.
