Title: What bow mounted unit to use with rear 898c SI?
Post by: fishinmusician on April 27, 2010, 12:54:58 PM
I am a completely non-technical kind of guy that wants to buy a new 898c SI to install near the stern of my Lund.  I'm not sure I even know the questions to ask, so please bear with my ignorance.

At the same time, I need to buy a new bow mounted locator/GPS.  I have a Motorguide Wireless trolling motor, and ideally, I would like to use the internal transducer that already in the Motorguide.  More importantly, I want to have GPS up front (which I don't have now), along with conventional locator functions, to help keep me on the structure while casting.

Here's my questions:

Do I even need a GPS up front, or can a regular locator receive the GPS/mapping data from the 898c SI through Interlink? (I don't need side imaging up front ).

Since cost is a major consideration, what is the minimum Humminbird unit I can still use up front?

Thanks for your help.

Dave

You at least need a “GPS capable” unit up front.  If you want maps than you will have to get a combo sonar-GPS unit (comes with its own GPS Receiver).  Mapping data cannot be passed from one unit to another.  Since you want to use this with the InterLink, the lowest cost unit like this would be the 788c or the 788ci (internal GPS) which has an MSRP of $650.

Thanks, Greg.  This is the info I needed.
