I just finished installing my new 898c. After reading the manual many times, it still was quite a learning experience for my "first time" install attempt. Just a few comments: The supplied mounting bracket looks nothing like the one in the 898 manual on page 16 (unless I'm not looking in the right place). It looks more like the template in "Appendix A" (last page of the pdf manual). That sort of threw me off. Also, the drawings of the Transducer Knuckle, etc. on page 17 don't seem to match the actual supplied parts. The assembly and installation of the transducer, in my opinion, could be explained better. I think maybe some pages of an older manual (and drawings of former parts) were used to make up the new 898 manual.
I'm not trying to make a big deal out of this, but for a first time install, it was sort of a challenge for me.
Can't wait to learn and use my new unit. I'm sure it's a great purchase for me. Anyone else out there agree with my assessment? Thanks.

The manual I got with mine looked like a manual for a 7xx series unit. None of the pictures matched the parts I had in my hands, and the manual was nothing like what is on Humminbird's website. Luckily, I had downloaded the online manual before my unti ever arrived, so I had that to work from.

Deltaden,
The manual was written for four unit models: 858c, 898c Si, 958c, 998c Si. The 858c and 958c use a different transducer than what the 898 and 998 units do. If you look back on pages 12 and 13. Page 24 is where your transducer installation instructions start and you are correct in that the images used in Appendix A is the correct template for your 898’s transducer.
Hooz,
Sorry about that. You can get the correct manual by calling the 1-800-633-1468 Customer Resource Center if you want a printed copy (I think they got some more of these in), otherwise the CD that comes with the unit has the same file as you downloaded.

Greg: Sorry for jumping the gun. I indeed was on the wrong section of the manual. Should have been in the "898 Install" section. I guess I was too excited to get it installed and in use. Thanks again. I plan to post some install images on this forum later this week.

After you mounted the transducer did you notice that it was not all that snug. I didi this last night and it moves around a bit and i would have figured that it should have stayed tight.
thank you for your time

kmercer,
It is loose by design. This allows it to kick up if something strikes the transducer.
