798's weird antics
« on: June 02, 2010, 10:53:57 PM »
I've had my 798 for a few months now and it's had a few hiccups, but the update fixed those.

However, the last few times I've been out, the sonar and downimaging depth readings will go bonkers every so often. I might be in 6 ft of water and everything is okay one moment, the next time I look at it, it might read 500 ft and the screens are thin at the top, like I'm really in 500 ft of water. A few minutes later I'll watch the screen expand to the proper depth, as if I went from 500 ft to 6 ft instantly.

I've also noticed the the scrolling stops every now and then.

Any suggestions?

Check your setting and make sure you are in auto depth mode.  Dont know if this is the problem but
there have been some other posts on this.

Another thought is to make sure the transducer is not mounted too high and it is bouncing out of the water.

VERY widespread issue since the DI update came out. There are posts about this on all the HB forums, and on all the DI units. Apparently HB is working on a fix.

Thanks for the response guys. I do know it's not coming out of the water. I have it mounted to a 60" Terrova and it's about 18 inches or so beneath the water. Really need to get that shaft cut down!!!

I'll wait for the fix or I was thinking about downgrading, then upgrading again.

I've learned to watch my DI and 2d bottom contour when I'm in less than 7ft of water...

They stay steady while the digital depth reading goes everywhere...

Pain in the **** but it keeps me from running aground....

Hopefully the new update fixed this problem.  My readings weren't as wacky as the OP, but they did get strange in shallower water.  I'll know how well it worked once I get back out on the water again - hopefully, it fixes this for everyone.

I had the same problem with erratic depth readings. It was even wrong in 25 feet of water.  I updated to the new firmware and it took care of the depth reading problem.
