More Cannonlink Questions
« on: March 21, 2016, 05:23:15 PM »
I have located a NIB Cannonlink module. I have a Helix 10 SI at the console, and a 999 SI up front. I know they are not compatible with the Cannonlink, so I am thinking about picking up an older version like maybe a 958 DI that I can get for fairly cheap just basically to run the Cannonlink and downriggers at the back of the boat. I have a few questions though. Will the 958 be able to use the connected XHS 9 HDSI 180 T transducer? Will it be possible to network all of this together, or would I need to set up a second network dedicated to just the downriggers? If I run a second network, will I need to use a transducer just for the 958? I realize this may be a little complicated, but I kind of like messing with this stuff.

The xx8 series units can only share Waypoints and "like Sonar technologies" with xx9 or HELIX ...

So the 958 DI could only share 2d and Waypoints with your newer 2 units ...

You would also need the AS ETH 5PXG if you plan on Ethernet connecting more than 2 devices ...

I think cannon box is interlink only. I don,t think you can do ethernet and interlink together. The xx8 I believe you could do interlink and just not network it to the others. You could move waypoints to the xx8 using an sd card to keep it current. At least that is what I recall. Bob

Yeah, that seems like what I have been seeing. I have the AS ETH 5PXG with the Helix 10 SI, 999 SI and Terrova I-Pilot Link attached now. I could connect the 958 to the network, but it couldn't see the SI, just the 2d and waypoints. Would I not be able to share the DI? The Cannonlink attaches to the 958 DI at the com port, and downriggers from the link. But is the 958 DI compatible with the XHS 9 HDSI 180 T transducer? I just would rather be able to run everything off of the one ducer. If I have counted right that still leaves a fifth spot available on the AS ETH 5PXG for a 360 tranducer to add to the mix. It would be a miracle if it all worked right! It looks like the 958 may not be compatible with the 360 though?
Thanks for the input guys

The 958 DI cannot share DI with the HELIX SI or 999 SI because the 958 DI is a different DI technology than the DI in the SI units ...(HB has not released software to allow Sonar sharing below xx9 series other than "like-Sonar technology sharing"

The 958 DI uses a DI xducer ... The XHS 9 HDSI 180 T is a SI xducer = non-like Sonar technologies ...

I have no idea how the Cannonlink will react hooked to the 958 at the same time that the 958 is ethernetted to the HELIX and the 999 ...(or if it's even possible) ...

It seems like I would be better off to go with something like an 898 that has side imaging also. It looks like they are 360 capable, and it looks like it would still run the Cannonlink. I wouldn't necessarily have to ethernet it I guess. Could I use a transducer splitter cable and run the 898 independent of the network, and just controlling the downriggers? I for sure don't want to chance doing any kind of damage to the Helix or 999 just for the sake of experimenting! I may be stupid, but I ain't rich! It looks like a new 898 SI could be had for @ $600.

I'm not sure I understand your idea of using a "xducer splitter cable and run the 898 independent of the network" ...

I can't find any definitive documentation that says Ethernet and Cannonlink cannot be run at the same time ... (Altho there is documentation that says Cannonlink info cannot be shared thru Ethernet http://www.cannondownriggers.com/uploadedFiles/Service/Product_Manuals/CannonLinkManual.pdf ) ...

When Ethernet is connected to the unit there will be a Network "Menu"  added to the "Accessories" tab ...

In this Network "Menu" you can choose which connected xducer to use from the list of available xdcuers connected to the entire Ethernet network ...

I think (repeat "think") you should be able to Ethernet the 898 to the 2 newer units to share Waypoints ...And still be able to control the Cannonlink from the 898 only ... And select the 898 to use any xducer on the network (not including a dedicated DI xducer if used) ...

You may just have to try it and see because I know very little about Cannonlink ...
