Helix 10 won't power on
« on: January 07, 2016, 09:52:52 PM »
Helix 10 SI worked perfect the first month (4 fishing trips). We remove head unit from the boat while trailering. Today, I screwed the head to the Ram Mount and was about to connect power when the plastic edge of the wiring harness (cable tray) itself touched the back of the head, I heard a static electricity pop and now the unit will not power on, with 12v to the connector.

I wonder what happened and how we can avoid it in the future. For now, I'm hoping someone has an idea short of shipping it to HB. Thanks in advance for responses.

I'm not sure why there would have been any energy transferred in that scenario ... Lots of users remove their head units after use ...

Hopefully you had a inline fuse in that power wire ... And hopefully it simply blew the fuse ...

When that checks out (and before you connect the head unit again) ...you might test the voltage at the end of the power cable and make sure it's not getting outlandish voltage above 12-13v ...

Thanks for the reply. The 3 amp in-line fuse at the fuse block did not blow, still 12v at the head connector.

As a public service, I'll summarize what HB CS told me: These units are very sensitive to voltage and amperage fluctuations. The 1st thing u always do with power problems is connect the unit directly to a good battery. Duh, I should have known. Sooo I did that and it worked ;D ;D ;D ;D. The problem may have been that the I originally hooked the unit up while the batteries were charging, may have sent 13+v to the connector, lesson learned.

It doesn't explain the static charge. I might install an in-line switch behind the unit to disconnect power from the connector while plugging in and out, as a precaution. Still, any day u don't have to mail the FF to Alabama is a very good day.

There is certainly no harm in a switch that you mention (if the connections are good) ...

Just remember to always power off the unit with the unit power button ...because the units have a shutdown procedure just like a computer ...
