899ci HD SI & 859ci HD DI?
« on: February 05, 2014, 11:38:59 AM »
I have both of these units brand new and installed on my boat. I had an issue with the 899 not locking GPS and showing battery voltage at 15.5 volts. I contacted H-Bird who stated I had a software issue and to return the unit, which I did. It is currently there now. My question here is about the 2D sonar. Both units are showing software version 6.8(1?). I've only had them on the water one time since installing them last week. The question I have is when in 2D sonar mode, neither unit showed a single fish return. I trolled around and drove around for about 3 hours on the lake, in water depth between 6ft and 30ft and never had the first return. What do u think?

Welcome to the Humminbird Side Imaging Forums Shane23ss.

What 2D sonar frequency(ies) were you using?
What Sensitivity menu setting were you using?
What was the SwitchFire menu set to?
Were you seeing any “targets” between the surface and the bottom?
Where are the transducers for these units installed?

I tried all the settings. Originally the unit was in full "default" mode for the first hour and a half or so. The lack of any returns is what caused me to start adjusting settings. I could not see any targets between the surface and the bottom. The only returns I would see was if the structure/item was attached to the bottom. In DI and SI mode I could see all kinds of returns, and several that I would say were fish (depending on the speed of my boat at the time). The transducer for the 899 is mounted on transom (in the same holes my Lowrance transducer was mounted in). it has clear view from all angles, and the SI and DI seem to work fine. The 859 transducer is mounted on my trolling motor using the "Transducer Shield & Saver" mount

You weren’t running these both at the same time were you?

Not sure what is going on here.  Maybe they will find something in your 899 unit while they have it in the shop.  It could be a problem with the 2D element in the HDSi transducer but there is no way to tell that unless you can test your unit on someone else’s boat or their unit on your boat.  This is only the 2D sonar here so you could cross test with someone else that has a Humminbird unit even if it is not a 899 unit as most use the same 83/200kHz 2D sonar.

Did I have both units at the same time? Well for the first hour or so I only had the 899 on at the console because I was just idling around with my trolling motor out of the water. When I was at the front with the trolling motor down, both units where on, 859 switching between 2D and DI mode, and the 899 I was switching between 2D, SI and DI, so I could see what returns I could or could not see in each mode.

Running both units at the same time could have triggered an automatic filtering of the 2D sonar signal but that should not have been the case with only the 899 running.  See about cross-testing with another Humminbird user to see if you get the same or different results with your unit or boat.
