999 vs lowrance hds9 gen3
« on: March 09, 2015, 04:41:17 PM »
hi there,
i am new on this forum so i would like to find out more opinnions about humminbird 999 vs lowrance hds9 gen3.
first of all i need a sonar for spinning (zander|silures etc)looking for quality on si and di (medium screen/compact if possible)for danube river with deeps no more than 30m.
since the prices in europe are quite the same between 999 and lowrance hds9 gen3 i am confused on the right  choice.
Any advice will be apreciated!
thank you in advance!

Welcome to the Humminbird Side imaging Forums Silviu.

I can’t help you with a comparison as I don’t have and have never seen a Lowrance HDS9 Gen3 in use, but if you have any questions about the 999cXi HD Si units I can help answer them.

I was wondering if i will buy the international model from Canada(has the metric units) could i  have some problems with the GPS /aquiring position and if i can import my local maps here (Delta Danube)?Any other differences between them ?there is a BIG difference on the price(1700CAD VS 2495 eur)!!!Seems our local bird distributor wants to get rich over the nigth or maybe there is a wrong strategy on EU with Humminbird:)

Hi Silviu

With an international import unit there should be no GPS problem. If you import a unit from Canada, you must also  be expected customs and transport cost to, which may be but still worth it. You will, however, no service in Europe get, but you need send back the unit  to the Canadian dealer or  direct to HB .

You won;t be able to import your local maps into either a domestic or International version unit.  The units only work with Navionics or LakeMaster mapping cards, the new ChartSelect map cards and AutoChart/AutoChatrt Pro maps.

Hi Silviu,
Be careful to not have a nasty surprise with this purchase.
Regarding the price, you could find in France, online store with all taxes included, the Lowrance HDS-9 Gen3 (full option) with 2389 E and the Humminbird FF999 SI with 1819 E.
With the HB the big advantage it's that you have one puck + if you wish a very powerful tool, this mean the AutoChart and also it's private regarding the data that you collect on the water.

You might also compare to the Onix 8 SI model or the Onix 8 SI NT.

Some people are interested in just seeing the bottom contour .... without the water column .....I use it occassionally when trying to get a good understanding of the general bottom composition in an area, but not very much

Hi ,

I took the decision to buy 999 bird instead of others.i will have it in the middle of may.
Just wondering:
1.is it possible to have issue with 800kHz if the software version will be 7.450(asking store salesman)?i read some posts and is still unclear for me.,but finally there is no big deal...i m more interested in 455KHz for the side.
2.on the water for any views on the unit can i make track back?scroll back?(meaning i want to see a structure which i alread passed and  cannot see it anymore in the current screen)
3.let's say i am moving with the boat using side imagging and looking at the unit and i want to measure the distance from my boat to  a structure on the one side located.should i mark it as a waypoint and then come to the spot?
i saw on tutorials that the unit is telling you a distance ,but i cannot understand what distance is indicated since the boat still moving.
Sorry if these subject were discussed before,  or maybe you can direct me there.
Thanks a lot in advance !
Silviu

Silviu,
1.  What 800kHz issue are you asking about?  There is no 7.450 software for the 999ci HD Si units but there was a 7.460 software release for them.
2. No, there is no track back or way to back up the sonar.  You can make a sonar recording and play it back if you want to.
3. You can mark structure that you see with a waypoint and the unit will show the distance to that waypoint (shown as “Distance” in one of the info boxes at the top of the display and it will show you the bearing to that location).  If the cursor is active it will also show how far away from the centerline (where the boat travelled) the cursor is (shown as “Cursor” in the info boxes at the top of the display).  As the boat continues to move away from or towards the marked waypoint or cursor position, the displayed “Distance” and “Bearing” should change as well.

thanks a lot Greg for all the answers.the software version will be as you mentioned 7.
460.the issue i have read was that both sides have blurred image and actually you could not understand anything from the image.just waiting for the unit ....than probably i will read more or ask here if something is unclear.this forum is the best from What i have seen so far

Silviu,
If it is the same 800kHz issue that the modification fixes than your unit should not have this if it comes with the 7.460 software as this issue happened to some units well before than.

Nice portable bracket.  Really like the vertical height adjustment.  Did you machine this yourself?

I also have built a transducer mount, although not near as nice as yours, for my boat.  I have included a link to the post.

http://forums.sideimagingsoft.com/index.php?topic=4764.msg29554;topicseen#new     Scroll down to red boat.

This may give you some ideas ( design wise ) for your larger boat.

I know a couple of people who have installed it successfully .... It is too new to know if it resolved the I-pilot link issue that was causing intermittent lockup problems with the 99 series.

Maybe shoot swf1960 a PM .... He has installed it.

Thank you for all the answers i got from each one, still i have some:
1.Does somebody know what is the DI range( wide setting on di menu) on 7.7m depth? From what i have read should be 1.5 times the depth but take a look on the picture attached ....
2.When i set the SI to blue color/ DI on Brown  and  move from different views i see that the SI goes back to brown colour. Is it a software bug?

Thanks!ila_rendered
