Sometimes it takes several minutes for the antenna to acquire the satillites ...(you will get no chart views until it does)...

Make sure the antenna has a good sight of the sky...and give the unit 5-10 minutes to see if it will connect... (this usually takes less than 2...even on 1st power up)...
_______________

A common issue with the quick attach bases is a possible bad connection...

You might think about taking the cables out of the base and plug them directly into the unit for testing...

One other test would be to put your buddy's unit on your antenna for testing ...

One more thing, I now have a steel roof on house and garage - OMG!
I have a heck of a time getting a signal lock - the HS GPS puck is close enough to one overhead door if I get Sat's in the right places - I get a lock, in a garage I wouldn't expect it to lock so I though I would toss that out there...
I had to pull the boat out half way for my i-Pilot to lock after I found it's beeper quit, and I was afraid I was going to have to use that STUPID pedal!!
My 798 can't see a thing in the garage..... :'(

After trying everything i decided to update the software i from 5.8 to the 6.4 and bam the gps connected.so that part is fixed but 1 more issue i am having and have not got to test after the update is after about 30 minutes of scanning with the side imaging the right side starts getting blank spots in it then after a bit longer it will completely quit working do you think the update will fix that to or what im thinking is a bad transducer...thanks for the replies

It does sound like a possible XDCR...
I would suggest you do a complete reset like you did before the update, and FWIW - a reset after can clear up some bugs....

G'Luck!

pistol1979,
Let me guess: you bought the AS-GRP GPS Receiver, didn’t you?  It requires the 6.300 or higher software to work with the older units like the 798’s.

For the right Si sonar blank spot issue: try swapping units with your buddy again to see if the problem stays with the 798 unit or stays with your boat.  That will help pinpoint where the problem is.

[I also sometimes abbreviate transducer as just “Xd”.]

Thats interesting if thats the case then the guy i bought it from lied because when i got the unit in the mail it came with the as grp puck and he said it was a working unit. So thats when i orderd a new puck and it would not work either so then i updated

Maybe he tested the 798 with another GPS Receiver and tested that GRP on another unit?  That should be the only way they both would have worked.

Just wanted to update. Thought it was fixed but my right side went out again so my buddy put it on his boat and used it all day with no problems so time to buy a new XDCR is the XNT 9 Si 180 T the only one that will work or is there a better option... Thanks....

You can use the HDSI xdcr on that but MSRP is $269 and can be found for just under $200 smackers.

It does improve the 455Khz imaging although the 798 doesn't have 800KHz capability, sharper images and is considerably larger (about 6" L.).

The Compact SI is $199 MSRP - and can be had for less also.

I do have one of the compacts sitting here, but have not given much consideration about keeping as a spare or selling as I have 3 machines, but sonar is unused on one - GPS only.
Good Luck!
Robert

I can't make that call for you - some folks say ABSOLUTELY YES and some say nope.
Depending on the pricing your get - it's probably $40-60 difference, and that doesn't go far now a days.
I have the HDSI on both ends of my boat and the 899ci HDSI originally comes with the compact (cSI) 455KHz XDCR.
Did I see a difference switching over - YEP and my eyes are not that good (diabetic).
For  the price difference, I myself say it's worth it. The only reason I didn't put my  cSI XDCR up for sale is in case I have a failure and I was toying with using it on the ice this winter, as my 798 serves year 'round and I run her in "dual beam"  (or US/2 for some model menus) mode thru the ice.
The DI has good target separation so I wondered if I'd like to try it.

HTH,
Robert
