I went to the boat last night, did the upgrade and tried the down imaging on a number of my recordings, with the hope of having some pictures for you. Have to say, what I got was very disappointing as the clarity was not good- it basically seems to be a yellow version of the 2D picture, although it does pick out clumps of weed very well.
I was also disappointed to find that I can't zoom on this view, so on the wrecks I'd found at 200 feet the images were so small that they weren't worth posting.
I can see that this could be a useful tool for anglers, but my first experiments with it on wrecks haven't been very successful.

I have yet to jump on the bandwagon with all the hype about Structure Scan and Down Imaging!  I have tested it and just dont see how it improves my ability to scan wide areas looking for structure, which is why we bought these units.

All DI does is imrove the 2d resolution, so a tree looks more like a tree vs a big blob of color!

I can see where the fishermen will like this and running 2d and DI side by side would nice.  Honestly, I hardly ever turn the 2d view on unless I am fishing!  But even then, all I need to know is, is there structure, bottom hardness and are there any fish!

Just my 2 cents!

Robert

Robert,

Let me first say that I am a fan of Humminbird especially with their great customer service.

I have spent three days on the water spending most of my time looking at my 1197c, comparing 2D and downimaging.  Spent first day with SI set up in 800kHz and the second day with 455kHz, the third day was a mix, adjusted the sensitivities up and down the scales.

Frankly, it appears that the downimaging is a cleaner outline of 2D without detail.

When I look at Sideimaging I can see rocks etc. that are like taking a picture with all of the shading (we do not have any trees and very little brush in this lake).

With down imaging I do not see any of the detail.  I have reviewed about 12 hours of my recordings as well as when on the water and think that the 2D is far superior to Downimaging.

I am disappointed with this part but everything else is good.  I think HB has more work to do on Downimaging.

Guy's,

We all knew that downimaging was about combining SI left and right+ changing the slant.
So don't whine, but be glad that h-bird did this WOW factor for $0.

By no means am I whining!  I am a very loyal promoter for Humminbird!  I love my 997c and the Side Imaging feature, and all of the latest updates are a huge step in the right direction.

I just think that there were alot of people who jumped on the Lowrance bandwagon with Structure Scan and thought it was the sh!t.  So many people were whining that Lowrance had stepped ahead that Humminbird had to answer back.  But in my opinion, Structure Scan was a gimic to make their LSS Side Scan seem better.

In my humble opinion, Structure Scan nor Down Imaging offer any significantly new information to the end user.  It only shows a thin slice of whats directly under the transducer.  Yes it does make the 2d more like a picture image, but so does SI.  The SI is already showing you whats directly beneath the boat in 455khz and the added benefit of seeing out to 240' to each side.  DownImaging does not do this!

Humminbird is defintely stepping in the right direction and they have made a lot of people happy by adding this, but for someone who is really looking for detail in the structure will end up going back to the Side imaging to get the clearer images!

Kosmo,

Those are some very nice images.

Could I get you to upload them to the Image Gallery here if you could.  The gallery is categorized and that way they will be easy to find in the future and the post will not slowly slip down in to oblivion!

Thanks,

Robert
