Title: 1950s-60s Hydroplane, Windermere UK
Post by: IRC Kevin on July 14, 2009, 01:35:47 PM
Originally this was thought to be some sort of catamaran, but enquiries are now pointing at a racing hydroplane that was last seen on the Lake 30 years ago.

nice find!! I wonder if it may be worthwhile to try and salvage it since it in relatively shallow waters. It also appears to be mostly intact.

We're hoping to get a camera down over the next few weeks, but if it's what we think it is, it's wooden, so won't be in too good a condition. The other problem is that the Lake District Authority own the lake bed and lay claim to everything recovered (that they find out about!) It's also right slap bang in the middle of the very narrow channel the Lake steamers use.

Kevin,

Thats a pretty cool image!  It would be great to see a close up with the 800khz transducer to bring out some more detail.

Let us know what you guys find and thanks for posting.

Good Luck,

Robert

Kevin, since the depth is only 8 feet  you should be able to salvage with a coupe of tubes.  the boat should not weight that much.  I would salvage and then let the water owner contact yo if they find out.  unless there is some law that you must notify them.   As robert said, can you get an 800 hkz shot.  chuck

Sadly, it turned out to be this-

An old jetty that had been towed out and sunk. (You can even make out the rope still attached to it) The first pic was one of my first goes with the HB and I must have been turning at the time and this distorted the picture to look like a boat. A good example of how side view can mislead and has made me double-check everything since then.

I was wondering what the line was in your first pic.  It looks to be attached to object and actually goes beyond it.
