Does anyone know if Humminbird will look at replacing NMEA 0183 with NMEA 2000 in the future?
-
not as far as i am aware
where have you heard this from?
-
I have not heard anything about this but than I have not been attending any new product or new product feature meetings either (my ‘normal’ job duties have prevented this). From past discussions I don’t know what this will gain us as far as our products go. The new 700 series units for 2011 will have Ethernet capability which I understand far surpasses NMEA 2000 capabilities.

I had not heard it was happening but was asked by an associate who is looking at a Honda 225hp that has NMEA 2000. I am not sure as to what he is trying to achieve between the two units.

I have heard of two guys that have used a NMEA 0183 to NMEA 2000 converter and got them to work. Don’t know a brand so I can’t help there other than to know that there is a possibility of doing this.

I found a couple of after market converters, this looks the simplest.

Carefull look if the converters translate the sentences you need and if the do so in the right direction.
some brands:
actisense
maretron
simrad
hendrik

Actisense was one of the ones that was used as I recognize the web page.
“Carefull look if the converters translate the sentences you need and if the do so in the right direction” – good point Hendrik.

a little bird tells me it will be launched next year, along with radar

Yes it will be one of the features added for the 2012 product year. The units will still output NMEA 0183 through the NMEA pigtail wire of the GPS Receiver. The added NMEA 2000 will be done through the Ethernet connection which will require the new AS-ETH-NMEA2K accessory (don’t quote me on the name though). I’ll try to remember and post more information as it becomes available.
