Down Image issue?
« on: October 10, 2011, 05:14:33 AM »
New  798ci  and first time HB user and was hoping someone might have some thoughts on these lines? They are in the Down image and right side sonar. Just sitting in the water with nothing on nor engine running. No variation in them during start/ idle/ engage of the engine but at around 4 mph they go away. Has anyone seen this before. Thanks

Can you post a side image of the installation looks like the speed switch or what ever that is might be in the
way.The lines in the water colume  on the side scan image I believe is reflection from your jackplate . Covering
that hole will help. Gary

I dunno if using a hole shot plate will be enough here Gary.  That water speed indicator may be forwards of the transducer.  Hard to tell from the picture he posted, but he may have to relocate the transducer to a position that will put it lower into the water.

Looking at the picture it sure looks like the water probe is in the way of the right beam. it also could be causing some turbulance.
I agree that relocate the ducer or the probe..

Thank for the response's.Unable to photo a side wiew right now but the transducer is mounted on the outside transom and the speedo and livewell screens are located inside on the lower step. The Jack plate is bordeline and I would maybe anticipate a little disturbance on the right sidescan but not on the down image. I don't belive it is turbulance due to the fact it is present at unit start up without the motor running and is constant and consistant during engine start/ prop engage and idle up to around 4 mph when it starts to go away. Thats what confuses me ::)

Sounds like at 4MPH the water turbulence blocks out the reflection.
**Looking for the one that makes it all worthwhile**

Hmmm! Thats an intresting thought, Thanks Bob I'll look into that and try some adjustment/ movement of the transducer.

The HB transducers for si are know for being sensitive to external influences. Bubbles mostly caused by location or other items near. also blocking one side of the signal.

OK.
PainterDude,
I have a few questions for you.
Please don't be offended, I can only go with what you've said, and based
on your pictures:

1) Is the outside of your transducer clean and not damaged?
No dirt/grass/plastic film, or scratches, dings, cracks.

2) The first picture looks like some kind of interference to me.
The second picture looks like some kind of blockage.
You said that everything was off except the sonar.
Are you absolutely positive that the only thing that
was turned on was your Humminbird unit?

3) Based on your picture, I can't see if anything else is
on the right side of the boat.  Is there anything else
that could be interfering with the right side-imaging beam?
Could the motor tilted down be catching the beam?
It's looks to me that you have about 4 inches space
between the bottom of the jackplate and the top of
your transducer.  It looks to me like you have enough
room there.

Your transducer wire does cross your water speed wire.
It's at a right angle, but it would probably be better if they
were not so close to each other.
Is it possible that the water speed wire is sticking out a little
and the right side-imaging beam may be catching it?

Good luck with your problem.

Finally got out this weekend and did some testing and ended up moving the transducerto the right, under the jack plate. That did the job and cleared up my lines with minor turbulance. Fairly easy to do and I appreciate all the help  :)

just fyi, the water speed line is just a hose pulling vacuum and shouldn't be anything electrical

it still can interupt the signal path or cause slight bubbles...
all of which the HBSI is sensitive too....
