Networking 2 units 898 ci si
« on: March 29, 2015, 06:36:53 PM »
on the Humminbird web site is mentioned about  AS EC 20E | Networking | 720073-3 that allows the connection of two Ethernet capable units to be connected.

what is not saying: this 2 units will share transducers, way points, routes, video signal ; WHAT is the main purpose of this cable ?

I have an 898 ci si at the console with and want to use another 898 or 998 at the bow with a quadra beam transducer ;
if I connect this two units with an ethernet cable what is happening exactly ?

I can also use TS3 switch to connect si and quadra beam to the same unit and connect with an ethernet cable  to the 2nd unit at the bow;

I can also use an Ethernet switch  AS ETH 5PXG | Networking | 408450-1  to to link the 2 Humminbird head units, share transducers, but is more expensive ;

can you guys help with any advise and any schemes to connect the units ?

thanks in advance

What data will be shared between two of more units that are Ethernet connected together is determined by the model of the units connected and by the software version.  This is the same whether it is a direct connection (Example: just using an AS-EC-20E cable) or through the 5-Port Ethernet Switch (AS-ETH-5PXG).

An 898 unit connected to another 898 unit (or 998) can share the use of a GPS Receiver, waypoints, water temperature, 2D sonar and Si sonar.

I don’t know if a QuadraBeam transducer connected to an 898/998 unit will be able to share its side beam sonar information over the Ethernet system.  It can share its 200/83kHz 2D sonar but I’m not sure about the 455kHz side beam sonar.

The 5-Port Ethernet Switch (AS-ETH-5PXG) is used when you have more than two devices that need to be Ethernet connected.

hi Greg and thanks for the answer ;
from what are you saying, in my case,  an ethernet cable (  AS EC 20E | Networking | 720073-3)  is having the same function as an ethernet switch (AS ETH 5PXG | Networking | 408450-1) ??

saying this because on the Hummibird ethernet switch description is written :
"" allows you to quickly and easily connect up to five Ethernet items.  Use it to link multiple Humminbird head units, share transducers"

is that correct ? it's enough for me only the ethernet cable ?

Yes.  All you need is an Ethernet Connection Cable.  If a 20-foot cable is long enough, than the AS-EC-20E is the one you need.
This will only connect two units together where the 5-Port Ethernet Switch would allow up to five units to be connected together (which you do not need at this time).

Hi Greg, with ethernet cable will share transducers too ; on the bow i will have quadra beam and at console si ; does this means at the console unit i can select quadra beam which is connected at the bow and viceversa ?

Yes, transducers data is shared through the Ethernet connection cable.
I had to contact someone else to ask about the QuadraBeam transducer and whether it can be shared through the Ethernet connection or if it can, what sonar will be available.  It may be a week as this is spring break for Alabama schools.

Thanks for being patient pescarul1, we have a lot of things going on here and it is sometimes hard to get the Engineers to slow down long enough to answer questions for us.

Yes, if you have a QuadraBeam transducer connected to an 898/998 unit, the QuadraBeam data can be shared across the Ethernet network to the console mounted 898 unit.  The full Si sonar data from the console mounted 898’s HDSi transducer could be shared to the bow mounted 898/998 units as well.
