At 35 MPH my unit says it is 9000 ft. What is the fastest you can go in order for the 2D sonar to show an accurate return?

Are you meaning theoretically or that we have actually done/seen/experienced?
I’ve been on a boat that held a bottom reading at over 65mph. This was a fiberglass boat with an inside-the-hull transducer.

What type of boat do you have, which transducer(s) are you using and where are they mounted?

no it is not an inside the hull it is mounted on the transom.

it is a fiberglass boat triton tr165 the unit is actually 798ci hd si so my dislexia has gotten the best of me so I apologize for that . the transducer is mounted 12" from the center of the hull.

With a fiberglass boat your best bet is an inside-the-hull 200/83kHz DualBeam transducer and an AS-Si-DB-Y cable. That would allow you to move your Si transducer where it works best for Si sonar and yet is a little more protected from possible damage.

Should i have installed the transducer on the lower step I.E. White area at the bottom?

The lower step would be ideal. Basically at any significant speed the transducer is pretty much out of the water.

Several decide to mount the HDSI where your installer mounted it and then run a shoot thru hull 2d on a AS SIDB Y cable ....

This allows better 2d high speed readings and allows protection for that $270 HDSI xducer...

On another note...I have seen posted SI images at 45mph...they're not very detailed...but descernable...

I would move it over a little more to the center. I think you will get some turbulent water coming off the outside of the strake. The closer to the bottom of the v the better, but you have to stay away from the prop enough to prevent any cavitation the transducer may cause. Here is where I recommend and you may even be able to go a little farther down as long as the bunk does not interfere.

Thanks Robert I am moving it to your recommended area I am afraid If I go any further in, I will hit the bunk. now I have to fix the hole and paint to contend with any recommendations on that?

An inside-the-hull transducer would give you the best overall high-speed depth readings and it would not require you to uninstall and reinstall the CSi transducer you have – no filling holes and painting/gel coating. The added bonus is that your transducer is more protected from waterborne objects where it is at now.

High-speed Si sonar will not allow for much detail at all.

Thank you very much Hummingbird Greg and RGecy, I appreciate your input hopefully that will fix the issue!

I went ahead and moved the transducer and ordered the inside the hull transducer as well I was seeing a little turbulence where I had it mounted anyway.

You can always revert back to your original software version if you don't like the 6.740...

I keep my "latest acceptable version" with my unit at all times in case Gremlins show up with any version I may be trying at that time...

Of course you will have to have your original version of software on a SD Card to be able to revert the unit back to your original version...

Or you can store back levels on your computer and then copy to the SD card when needed... Rickie makes a good point in having a backup back level available for these units.

I just installed my 798 on my 84 champ and at speed it read 1.6 feet... Wonder if it's the same problem

Humminbird_greg you mentioned the boat had a fiberglass hull and it had an inside-the-hull transducer, was that one that was installed as in glued to the inside as a shoot thru or a actual thru hull that was drilled thru the hull?

That was an epoxied inside-the-hull transducer on a Ranger 370V I believe.

At 65 mph on a light fiberglass boat a true Thru-Hull transducer would possibly upset the hull and cause the boat to flip or something disastrous like that! A guy that used to work here had an Allison bass boat that would run 100 mph (he only had it up to 96 mph…) and any type of external transducer would cause it to run badly, so all of his were either inside-the-hull or were mounted far enough up the transom that they did not touch the water when he was on plane or coming off plane.
