898 - First time out
« on: March 11, 2010, 09:50:49 PM »
Well, I left the rods at home and went for a nice boat ride playing with my two new 898's.

I'll tell ya, I had more trouble launching and landing the boat ( will save this story for later ) than I did using the units.

Right out of the box, it seemed to work good. Of course, I tweaked it and played with various settings.

It seems that blue and amber1 gave me best view of the hi-def stuff.

I turned switchfire to max and clear and adjusted the sensitivity with each.  Can see a use for both.

Was a little concerned that I might have installed the transom transducer wrong, but it seems to work just fine with just a little bit of interference on the starboard side which seems to be coming from a strake about 3.5 inches further starboard.

I ran by some bridge pilings and stumps and everything was vertical that was sposed to be.  So pretty happy with that.

Went by some riprap to see what it looked like and ran across a school of fish.  Looked real good on DI.  Made me happy.

As of day 1, I am pleased with my decision to go with these units.

Welcome to the family Stymie! Glad everything is working well . Enjoy!

TWH,

Here a shallow water shot I took last year.

Hate to see her go, but love to watch her leave.

TWH,

I may have been in some shallow water,  but only when I was testing the trolling motor ducer out.  Where I've been testing is within 15 miles of my house, down country roads and not my normal area of fishing.  This is pretty much a traditional river area, so I hit inside and outside turns, riprap and erosion while checking it out.  I know that I got shallow, but not knowing the area very well, was trying to stay at least six feet or deeper.  ( This area has a lot of huge boulders that like to sit in the least likely areas.  )

To go to my normal areas would have made me fight rush-hour traffic for a 23 mile drive.  I would have been limited on time due to darkness and kids needing to do school work.

I'm hoping Walmart in Guntersville has some SD cards since I'll be there for the next week or so.  Would like to bring back some images for you guys.

Put in about 70 waypoints tonight, naturally my handheld did coordinates slightly different than HB and I had to do a little math.  Some of those areas are really spot on and wanted to be sure I got them in right.  ( I'll take the handheld just in case my math is spotty! )

Does the 898 have a video output?

edit: I found it. It has video output (manual, site 6 / 131). It is interesting that only the international version is able to send in PAL system
