1197c loosing Interlink and GPS
« on: April 05, 2010, 01:28:01 PM »
I think there is more then this bug in the 4.75 software for an 1197.  In my unit the issues started out with not being able to save a screen shot for a waypoint of make a recording with the 2010 Navionics Platnium map in the unit.  After talking with Greg I found this is a know problem and they are working on getting the software updated.  I also have had issues with the short cut button located right above the power button randomly shutting the unit off from time to time when switching back to that view.  I also have a interlink in the boat connecting the 1197 at the consoule and the 788ci at the bow and for some reason it randomly disconnects from the interlink causeing the 1197 to loose it gps signal.  The only way I have found to get it to reconize the interlink and gps signal again is to shut both units in the boat off and then power them back up.  The 1197 is new to me this spring but it is interesting how issues  keep popping up at random and are not always repeatable.  Looks like they were a little quick to release the update to 4.75.  Hopefully a the next version of software will correct the issues everyone seems to be having right now.

blharr4400,

The interlink dropping out and losing gps signal could be due to wiring.  I have read several accounts of users wiring directly to battery with larger gage wire (and inline fuse of course) and this remedied the issue.

As for the button turning the unit off, does it always happen?

Robert,

I dont think it is a wiring issue and this is why I say that...

1)  The gps always powers up and provides signal and as long as I am moving at high speed it stays working.  It only occasionally drops out on the 1197  when fishing and is unpredictiable as to when it will do it.  I have had the unit for a mount now and it just started doing this days ago.
2)  When the 1197 looses gps thru the interlink I can switch the 788 on the bow to the interlink gps and it will provide the 788 with gps signal and functions but will have nothing on the 1197.
3)  It was installed by a local humminbird detailer per humminbird specs so I would think/hope all the wiring is correct.

As for the button turning off the unit that has also just started happening in the last week and there is also no rim or reason as to when it will or wont happen.

blharr4400,

Lets start a seperate topic on this.  The more you tell me, the more it sounds like a power issue!

OK...

So are you thinking it is a power issue for the 1197.  There is a volt gauge in the boat that says while the main motor is running it is supply 13.5 volts to the cranking batter which the 1197 is hooked to...  I notice the hot button shutting the unit off while driving around and searching for stuff.  So I would think there is plenty of power to the unit.  I am just really confussed right now as you know my past and this is already my second unit and stuff is starting to happen with it now too.  What kinda power related issues do you think I am having?

If this all just started happening a week ago, what has changed?  You would have most likely noticed it immediately if it was software related.  And if it was software, why would it only do it when you are standing still!

Please give me a detailed description of how your units are connected?  How is the GPS connected? Is it connected to the interlink or directly to the 1197?  Do you have any other accessories?  Are the 788 and 1197 running from the same fuse block and battery?

could it be a power problem with a shared ground wire not being large enough.  I ran into this a few years back in which the ground would not support the combined flow. It would not trip cb's or fuses nor burn the wire.  It just could not carry the energy to  let the unit detect the amount it needed.  and it would shut down.  this was lowrance 104 so it does go back in time but the issue was too small of ground wire.  I would suggest a wire of 12 guage (min)  for sharing grounds back to the battery.  Just something to look into.   chuck

You need to load test your batteries.  Just because you have 13.5 volts while running does not mean your batteries are putting this out.  Your alternator/generator is puttin out power when running.  Also, smaller diameter wiring cannot handle the load (amps) that the electronics may be putting on it.

I had to increase my main bus wires a few years ago.  My vhf would pull more power than the wire could handle sometimes.  If you do not have a fuse on the main bus, it may be overloaded!

Do you have the low voltage alarm turned on on your 1197?

Robert,

Yes I have the low voltage alarm turned on on the unit and set at 10 volts and it is yet to go off.  I also took the boat out fishing tonight and seemed to have no issues at all.  When I got home I did some digging and checkied out how it was wired and found the power leads for the unit run straight to the batterie with an inline fuse.  Just wierd that it only happen on one trip.

OK, well at least we eliminated that scenario!  ;D ;D  Sounds like its rigged up nice.

I was under the impression though that this was a regular event, not just a one time occurence!  Not that it should even happen once.

Let us know if it happens again, and we can address it some more then.
