Any reason to upgrade to the new software??
« on: December 30, 2012, 09:05:53 PM »
After reviewing the most recent upgrade for my 798 I have decided that there is no reason for me to upgrade....but...
Did I read on another topic on this forum that since the upgrade their SI is running better faster? Seemed to me that the only reason to upgrade was to resolve the glitch (which doesn't affect my unit) and for the addition of 360 which is something would never be able to afford and kudos to those who can.
So what are people finding since the upgrade???

I also am waiting to upgrade .... Mainly because I keep reading that people are ending up with units that need to be sent back to Hummingbird after an update...... How hard is it to get updates right?

Apparently Hummingbird is using a version of Linux on their newer units..... So what the heck is this with no bootstrap fix for broken updates.... This isn't windows .....

I upgraded the to the most recent with no problem using a SD card. It was beneficial whereas this one seems more for the addition 360 and as previously stated won't be needing it.

The risk that the unit may fail due to incorrect update has me also prepares regular discomfort.
One way to put the unit to factory default then back to would certainly be possible and desirable.
Unfortunately, HB has little interest in our needs. :(

This is what bird lists as changes. If your planning on switching to Ipilot, radar, or 360 you will need to update. Funny thing is it doesn't mention 360 in the description. but its supposedly there according to other posts.

Description:
v6.570 - 1. Removed Universal Sonar II transducer selection option, now users should select dual beam as their selection. 2. LakeMaster map coding was updated to work with i-PilotLINK 3. Tweaks were made to radar functionality to fix a memory leak 4. Fixed a bug that caused some models to sometimes skip a view when cycling through views. 5. Locked NMEA output at 4800 baud when enabled 6. Added iPilotLINK operation menus and capabilities

As stated in this posts and some of my earlier posts that so far I have had no issues with setting up or updating my unit. Given I'm a first time user of any sonar product I think HB are doing some things right.
Seems that they may need to improve on other areas :)

I wish I could just pick ones I need like 1,4 and 5 would do me :)

Some updates are extremely beneficial.
While other's cause lots of problems, and may
make you want to smash your unit against a wall.

I personally feel that Humminbird doesn't thoroughly
test all of the upgrades, especially with all of the
possible accessories.
People have complained about it, and hopefully
Humminbird will improve on their testing.

My advice is that if you don't need to upgrade,
then wait awhile, and give some time
for others to upgrade.
Then do web and forum searches for your
particular upgrade.

It shouldn't take long to find out if the
upgrade is good or bad.

After reading the description of the upgrade, I sure can't see any reason to try it.  Like to hear what
Greg Walters thinks.  Doesn't appear to be beneficial to most users.  tight lines  - Fay

It also added 360 views and op menus, though on 998 the description does not have 360. I have played with those in Sim mode.

Waiting to update is not a bad idea. I usually update as soon as it comes out. I can drive to HB and get my unit fixed though. I've never had an issue upgrading.

I will be upgrading to i pilot link, so if SW update was going to brick my unit I wanted to know ASAP.

I downloaded just to play with the 360 simulator.

I also noticed that if you hold the view button for about two seconds, you get an express menu that lets you go directly to any screen rather than toggling the view and exit buttons.

That's about all that I've noticed with this update, but do like the express menu.
