Since April of 2014 I have been going to Laurel Lake Ky searching for a man who went missing July 05, 2012. The lake is deep, 200' in the area, and cold (40 degrees below 40'). In January Brian Abbott went there for me and used his Konsberg Mesotech sector scanning sonar. He spent 5 days and located 1 image of interest.
This past week I returned with my 898. I have a surface transducer, a towfish, that can be deployed to 33' (110' of cable) and my 360 sector scan. I added cable to give the 360 an opportunity to drop to 50'. I was able to locate the tree that the image is in, effectively finding a needle in a haystack.
While on scene this week we anchored over this tree and located it on video with a great drop camera. I sent a diver down and was able to follow him on the 360 which I dropped to 50'. I imaged the tree and target, the diver, and his bubbles. I also got a piece of the buoy line.
My image, of the target matched the KM Sector scan image to a "T".

With this post I am going to show you what is capable without expensive sonar units and accessories. Maybe people can be recovered when others have given up. This takes a lot of time and dedication but this search has produced positive results. I believe this image is the man we are searching for and we are taking steps to verify that. We ran out of time and will return to, positively identify the target as Clarence Holmes and then recover his remains.
Pic 1 should be B Abbott's image. It is darker and more clean.
Pic 2 will be my image of the target, in the tree, and the diver.
Pic 3 will be a blown up image of the diver and his bubbles.
Pic 4 will be a blown up image of the target to compare with the lines of the Abbott image.
I may have a few additional images but the above descriptions will allow you to know what they are.

Did you drop the 360 to 50'? If so, it must be better sealed than I would expect.
I have developed a manual deep water sector scanning method that is used from ice in the winter. But ice is not always present everywhere so I really need a simple sector scanning gear that gives stable results in any conditions. If the 360 can be submerged it could perhaps be developed for use also in deep water.

I have been using it all week at 50'. Make sure and, occasionally, check the screws that hold the transducer together. I am going to have the cable extended to 150' soon. I'll use regular cat 3 cable. I figured if a go pro camera, that has a small oring, can seal it to 200' (or so) this has to be better than that. Humminbird has no reason to test this for anything but fishing. The 360 looks, surprisingly, like the early Konsberg Mesotech unit. You can see 2 divers on a tree in the first image, and I think the two, in an upright position in the next. You can also see the down line in the tree we are searching.

I am going to have the cable extended to 150' soon.
That's brave! Please, tell us if that works. If the 360 can be used at such depths, that paves the way for very interesting new applications.

I will be testing this to depth soon. I have 140' of drop now. The cable length has not affected it and it works fine.

I returned to Laurel Lake Kentucky in my continuing search for a missing man. I am pretty sure I have him in a stand of oaks that start in 160' and rise to 100'. I had extended my 360 cable to 140' which gives me 135' to work with. These images came from the 360 deployed to 135'. It worked great!

That's encouraging news! Your brave experiment shows the 360 can withstand the pressure at large depth. This is critical information and without it I would not order a 360. Now, things change... Are you sure there are no damages to the 360?

I used it multiple days without issue. Daily I check that the screws are snug, but nothing besides that. If the o-ring on a Go-pro camera is good, you can bet this is fine. Humminbird develops stuff for fishing. The research and development is toward that end. It worked flawlessly for me and I believe gave me what I need to plan a recovery for this young man. Mark, This is awesome the efforts you and your team are taking to help bring closure for the family. Personnally having a hard time reading some of the images but I'm a rookie at this stuff. Very interesting still. Read some of the Facebook stuff too. Big Thanks Again!! Mike
