Loran C???
« on: March 14, 2013, 08:33:53 PM »
I know Loran C is an old technology and in most cases is not used anymore but Is there a way to show the old loran c lines on either humminbird maps or navionics charts on the humminbird units?  Reason im asking is because even though loran c is not in use anymore, many people where we fish still refer to areas in the lake by there loran numbers.  Like they will say we were fishing at the 680 line.  I, being the younger generation, have no idea what or where there talking about.  Thanks guys

No, since the unit does not use Loran, I am sure they removed any reference to them.  May be worth the effort to mark some waypoints from an old Loran chart and name them according to the Loran lines.

That's one thing I thought about.  To bad there isn't an overlay feature that you could use.  But with the outdated loran c I could see why.

Try contacting Don Seaman from Seaman Electronics.
He's pretty sharp and dates back to the Loran C days.
He has my old Sitex Loran C box.

You could possibly set these up as Tracks in Google Earth (or some other program) and print out reference maps of them complete with waypoints (and coordinates).

I know that in the past I have seen web sites that allow you to convert Loran C to GPS and vice versa.

Thanks mike.  Maybe ill contact him.  I talked with a couple other guys that fish the area and there going to look and see if they can find any of there old maps.

Greg, That's sounds like a great idea but the problem im having is I cant find a map that gives me those lines.  Ive googled it and haven't found anything.  I have found paper map companies that will sell them but there pretty expensive. Prob not worth buying.  Plus the maps are probably so big I wouldn't be able to use them on the boat while on the lake.  It would be nice to find some that's notebook size that's in 3 of 4 pages where I could keep it in a binder or something on the boat.
