GPS receiver - NMEA pigtail
« on: May 11, 2015, 12:06:09 AM »
I have a GPS receiver at the console that will not connect to my 998.  It has worked fine in the past but recently I could not get it to connect.  I have an AS GPS HS on the bow that works fine, but when I move the unit to the console the other GPS receiver will not connect.  After inspecting everything I found the end cap of the NMEA pigtail is broken off with a few exposed wires.  I do not use NMEA for anything but was wondering if this could be the culprit??  Is so, is there a temp fix to get this to work until I order a new receiver (maybe soldering it??)?

The pigtail protector is just a plastic cap to cover the exposed wire ends ...

These bare wire ends in the pigtail must not touch ...definitely don't solder ...

Am I understanding that the 998 is at the console and its external GPS antenna is the one with issue ...??

And what unit is at the bow that you have cross-tested with the console GPS ...??

I move the 998 from the console to the bow depending on how I am fishing.  So same unit.

OK I understand now ... The 998 is used at 2 locations on separate GPS antennas and the console AS GR50 is not connecting ...

Make sure the bare wire ends of the pigtail are not touching ...

Wiggle the connector at the back of the unit while viewing the accessory test view to see if a loose connection could be at fault ...

The best test for a GPS antenna is to hook another unit to the GPS antenna to determine if the antenna is faulty ...

If you don't have access to another unit ... Call HB ...
