Since the newest of softwares for the 898 SI have been released ( 4.970 ), I have already seen where folks have not had the best of luck with this and resorted back to the 4.880 version.

I kinda need to know what to do .....

One option is to load the new software version in your unit, then delete it from the SD card, and then load the current version you have now on that card so you can change back to the older version if it doesn't work for you.
You can get your current software version from this site, just in case you may need it.

The way I did mine is to have two SD cards with a software version on each of the cards to reload either for testing. My new software (798ci SI) did not seem to solve the digital depth reading issue, but I am going to try it on another body of water before I decide to remove it in favor of the older version.

I have to agree with what Wayne said.  I have heard of quite many people who are happy with the update and the shallow depth readings.

Remember to power on your unit before you insert the sd card.  Restore the defaults and then insert the SD card and follow the prompts.  Once it reboots, remove the card and restore the defaults again.

Give it a shot and let us know what happens.

Good Luck,

the new software seems to have fixed my depth readings in shallow water, BUT and there is always a But. Now my screen (si and Down imaging)  is very dark. With a little tweaking i gotmy side imaging a little brighter, but my down imaging is so dark it is un readable. I am gonna tweak the setting some more next time out but i may just go back to older software. Did not have the problem til i upgraded and yes i updated the way one is supposed to.

Can anyone tell me what this new updated version is suppose to do other than possilby help with the shallow water reading.

The one thing I would like to see in a update is to be able to remove all readings from the S I view page.

Other than that...my unit seems to work really good and I think reads decent in some shallow waters.

I'm just scared to take a chance and mess something up.....since my unit is going  good right now.  I took to a lake today ( Sunday ) with tons of underwater cover, creek channels and fish...wow...showed baitfish like I have never seen.

Thanks for everyones help.

As much as I would like to "jump" on any improvement that HB puts out in their software.....I'm waiting to hear more comments in the forums before I update.....It's not like the update is a "get it now or lose it" feature...

I would rather listen to other user's quirks of the update beforehand so I can decide if the update is even worth the trouble that other users may be experiencing...

I did the update on my 798c and am very happy with the performance. Weeds on the down imaging look really great whereas before they were just blobs for the most part. Shallow water works great (read consistently even in 2 ft of water, though I wasn't that shallow by choice which is another story). Only problem is I forgot I had reset to factory setting so I was no longer taking screenshots with my waypoints, so I don't have any screenshots of the great fish crib images I thought I got this weekend.

I do most of my fishing in <15 feet so it was a no brainer for me. I didn't get any good fish arches though, but that may be because I didn't find any fish that weren't glued to the bottom (I'm sure severe weather the night before sent them down). This weekend I'll be on my home lake where I know where the fish are (and they will be suspended), so I can really put the fish arch thing to the test.

I got my side and down imaging to be brighter looks real nice nad depth readings were accurate but now for some reason i lost the readout for depth. I checked in the settings if it was still listed as being in the spot were i put it on the side readout, But now it disappered.  Should i install the older version and then reinstall the new update again....... ???

Just download the new file to your card reader with a formated SDHC card in it.

You will need an Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) card.  Get a good one to use for this.  I personally use the SanDisk Brand.  Get a level 6 or higher SDHC card.  I use the level ten cards.  Level 10 cards read/write much faster than the older Secure Digital type cards.

Also get a good card reader that will connect to your computer with a USB 2.0 type connection.  Make sure that your card reader will read SDHC cards.   Some of the older card readers only read the SD cards.  There is a difference between an SD and the SDHC cards.

Some computers are loaded with hundrends of "TEMP" files .   It's best to clean these temp files out from time to time.  They really can slow down a computer.

You can do a search for "*.tmp" and see how many tmp files are on your computer and where they are located.    Windows XP Home  has a way to clean them out.  Start/All Programs/accessories/system tools/disk cleanup.   Do this before you download any new files to your computer.

Regards,

Is this supposed to the the fix ? The depth reading was changing almost twice a second so I got screens shots with several different depth readings and maybe one out of 1/2 dozen readings were the correct depth. I adjusted the sensitivity to 0 and the raised it until I got a solid display line. 200 khz, Switchfire-Clear

I updated last week.  The "shallow water issue" is now gone.  It now works fine for me.  Very stable depth readings.

Mine has now been updated but will not know if everything works "right" until I hit the water Monday.  I used the step by step process and worked without a snag.

My question....can I download all three ( 3 ) updates on one S D card just to keep in my boat?

It would be best to store downloads on your computer and only have the current on your SD.  After you update your unit you can delete the download on the SD.
Remember to restore defaults prior to updating.
