Title: gps receiver

g,day just received my unit 898c and about to install today as I  am on call for work and cant go fishing , I have just signed up to try and find out as much as i can B4 I hit the water and was just wondering can I mount the receiver in a vertical position in an open tinnie .

You can mount it vertically but I doubt it would work as well as if you mounted it horizontally as it was designed to be used.  The GPS Receiver was designed to receive satellite signals from 10 degrees above the horizon and upwards.  Mounting it on it’s side would make it have to work more like a stationary radar receiver and only be able to receive satellite signals from the direction that the top of the housing was more or less pointing.

We tried the verticle mount with our portable system but as Greg says, it is less sensitive to satelites on the horizon. It would drop signals. Once we returned to the horizontal mount we did not have problems.

I saw the same when using the ext 50 channel receiver on a 4' rod.  This was a portable set-up to plot some boundry points for some property.    Held horizontal, I got within a few feet for estimated position error.  If it was at some angle the number of sats dropped and error increased.   Keep it horizontal.
