Title: 6.740 Software Update and GPS issue - 898
Post by: Skot on April 10, 2014, 04:10:16 AM
Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone has had issues with their GPS cutting in and out after they have downloaded software update 6.740 to a 898 international version (or US)? I constantly get a pop up alarm saying "No GPS Position Fix". It comes an goes even when just sitting still.

The ONLY reason why I updated the software was to get the finder to talk to the I Pilot Link. It originally had software version 6.490. So the only thing that I have done is install the I Pilot Link on my boat and update the software of the finder. I have tried wiggling cables to see if any movement can trigger the GPS to drop out but it doesn't seem to be a cable issue.

When powering up the unit I went into the systems status page and looked at the GPS signals, there were many satelites shown but intermittently they would all drop out together, along with the time, lat and long coordinates.

The update I got was from myhumminbird account on the humminbird.com website. Is there specific software updates for international and US finders ie. could have I updated my international finder with a US based update?

Any help and advice would be very much appreciated.

You should not be able to install the wrong software update into your unit as each model has their own unique updates.  If the international and domestic units are using the same update it wouldn’t matter anyways as it would still be the same software.

Any way to cross-test your unit on someone else’s boat that has a Humminbird unit (and their unit on your boat)?  Otherwise I would look at the power connections to your 898 unit as we have seen low power problems cause GPS issues.  Make sure all electrical connections are both tight and corrosion free.  Don’t forget the fuse, fuse holder and battery connections when checking.  Getting the battery load tested would be a good idea as well.

Thanks for the advice Humminbird_Greg. I'll be sure to test the power connections and meter at the plug once my father returns the boat after his weekend fishing trip. As for cross testing I don't know anyone with the same unit however I will try the boat shop where it bought it from.

Thanks T.G. You're input in very much appreciated.

I will let you know how I go.

Cheers.
Skot.

Skot,
You could also test it with a 998, 899 or 999 model Humminbird unit.  Same connections and mounting brackets.

I tested my power supply and had 13.2V at the plug to the back of the unit. Checked fuses, ok and no corrosion.

I tried bending the pins slightly on the power plug and GPS cable. This did not seem to have an affect.

I believe the most likely cause was the cable pentration cover plate was screwed down too hard over the cables and pinched the GPS puck cable. The extra Ethernet I-pilot Link cable took up more space and created a tighter bunch of cables.

I flexed cable at the pinch point until it came good. I used it yesterday for >4hrs and had no issues at all. If it fails again I will cut out the bad section of cable and splice.
