Title: 998c HD SI Combo to a 958c HD DI combo
Post by: Gaspergoo on January 31, 2013, 05:38:03 PM
Found my original post, but decided on a 958 instead of a 858, really glad I did, just love the way both units work, but still got a lowrance to fit the dash
as a dedicated GPS....I know old habits are hard to break, but I had an LMS 480 there and had to have something to fill the hole with.

Anyway the Elite-5M Gold is GPS only it has a Navionics chip and will have Boatlanes software on it soon

998 is on the dash,958 on TM connected by ethernet, both units are hooked up to their own GPS pucks, I understand from my previous post that I need a mapping
card in each machine, thus when I create a GPS point it will show up on both units, in your opinion, should I get 2 Navionics to match whats in the Elite, or go with
2 Lakemasters so I can get the best of both chips, or better yet have 1 navionics chip in the 998 and a lakemaster in the 958.

I know if I mark/save something on the 998 it will show up on the 958, but will it work vise/versa...mark something on the 958 will it show on the 998

Secondly I read somewhere to register with Humminbird PC which I will do, but do they make a cable to go from the 998/958 to the computer, maybe like a usb cable or something

I have spent the last week finding the settings for SI and DI, will try them this weekend

Thanks for the help

1st, you waypoints are not stored on the mapping card, they are store in your unit.....they appear on your maps as a kind of "overlay."

I don't live in Texas, so I don't know how many of the lakes you fish are HD surveyed by Lakemaster, but there are a few special features Lakemaster has for Humminbird that Navionics does not.  It could be that some lakes are better with Navionics and some are better with Lakemaster....you would have to get on their web pages and do some serious research.  Maybe you could buy one of each and have the best of both.  You could easily move them between units if desired.  (I would prefer the Lakemaster in most cases at the console just because of the depth offset feature and it could keep you from running aground because a lake level is lower than when the mapping was done.)

If you have your units connected with ethernet, waypoints you do on either unit will show up on both.....as long as they are connected.

There is no PC cable for the 958 and 998 units.  You can move the Nav Data (waypoints, routes and tracks) back and forth from the units to the PC by using a SD/SDHC memory card.
