How much would it cost to replace or repair if it's not under warranty?
It's a great deal but I'm worried I may not be able to detect an issue before I buy it.

According to the Humminbird website it would be $290.45 + S&H.
The manufacturer’s warranty is non-transferable.

Sorry for my ignorance but I'm guessing that price of $290-ish includes a complete unit rebuild and not just one small $8 part...right?

Its whatever is required to get the unit back up to factory specs - short of physical damage.  The unit has to pass the same electrical testing that a new unit does.  That price also includes a 90-day warranty.

If the previous owner registered the unit online can't he just go in to his account and change his name to mine under edit profile information? Am I circumventing policy by doing this?

I don’t know about the name changing BL as I can’t access that part of my Humminbird account right now…  I guess that he could and as long as you had the User ID and Password you could use the account.  You should register the unit for yourself though so that you will get any automated email messages.

Whether you register the unit on the Humminbird web site or not does not affect its warranty (unless it is the additional warranty through the Humminbird Select program).  You would still be required to show proof of purchase from a retailer.

Thanks for the details Greg.
The gentleman selling the used unit said he would gladly give me the original receipt of purchase and turn over his online account to me.
