Title: 1197 and AIS

Anyone fitted this as yet?
If yes any tips or pointers, can't seem to find a lot of info on it but know you can do it.

Was looking for some techi info as the AIS is new to the 1197 there is little or no details of what to connect to where, what leads are needed etc.

As for connecting the NMEA output of the Humminbird to the AIS transponder, this would be accomplished using the pigtail coming off your GPS cable. There are three wires, red, black, and white. You will not need to use the red (+ power for powering handheld gps). The NMEA output will be on the white wire and the black will be the ground or common wire.

Actually there was one small statement about the AIS in the 4.510 software text:
“v4.510 Supports the XM NavWeather accessory. Supports AIS receivers. Adds new 2D sonar processing techniques, including the ablity to turn off TVG. Adds SI Image Enhancement features. Supports operation of the CannonLink accessory across an InterLink accessory. Modifies the Depth Offset menu item to shift the sonar image, not just the digital depth. Expands Water Type selections to include deep and shallow salt water. Adds Waypoint Decluttering control. Adds Demonstration mode menu item to disable point-of-sale mode when using a transducer with no thermistor. Fixes the color of shoreline construction on Navionics charts. Resolves MMC (not SD) access problems.”

This is only for the 1100 series units as they are the only ones with the extra NMEA Port connection. I spoke with one of the Quality Techs here and she had successfully connected two different AIS receivers to an 1100 series unit to confirm that it worked. She used an AS-HHGPS cable plugged into the NMEA port on an 1157c instead of using the NMEA Pigtail connection as the NMEA port will support two-way communication (the NMEA Pigtail is a ‘talker’ only connection).

Could you clarify your comment about the 1197 having the extra NMEA port connection? My manual indicates that the port is GPS out. Is it really NMEA bi-directional?

If that is so, am i correct in reading this that she had both the AIS receiver and the HB GPS unit connected at the same time?

Al lot of things have still to be translated in dutch, so i moved the unit to english.
There is No AIS in the accessoiry menu, where it should be.

Am I looking at the wrong places?

When an AIS receiver is connected, the tab will be in the menu.
It works on 4800 and 38400 baud. So most AIS receivers are compatible.
Just use an AS HH cable in the accesoire bus.

That is great to know, especially that it works at the AIS standard 38,400 baud. If you have the AS HH cable, would you advise the pin outs for that and how you had it connected?

Connect the green and black wire to your AIS receiver TX+ and TX-.
And voilla, there she goes.

It will only work if the other ships would have a transmitter to send the data the HB can receive.

Don't know if a lighthouse has an AIS, but I'm sure Hendrik knows.

What I was asking was which pins on the AUX Comm plug do those two wires go to? I do not have the AS HH cable, but have a few of the GPS/Comm "Y" cables that I am going to cut to make cables with. Howevere, it sounds like it should be the same colors/cables

Download and look at the new 898/998 operations manual. One of the ports is listed as “RS-232”.

Post by: bistatecats on April 14, 2010, 03:13:06 AM: hello gentlemen. i have an 1157c. standard horizon has come out with a vhf radio/ais reciever combo. the gx2100. the owners manual shows the nmea wires as grey, green,blue,brown on the 2100. the gx2100 manual is online by searching gx2100 manual and the nmea wires are on page 6. on the as hhgps i only see 3 wires on the humminbird website and i cant tell the colors. has anyone hooked up the gx2100? i am not worried about the DSC on the vhf part. i only want the ais targets on my chart. any help? thanks Rick

Brown wire: NMEA 0183 – HS (38400 bps for AIS data) Input/Output: GX2100: Output, GX2000: Input

Blue wire: NMEA 0183 (4800 bps for GPS data) Input

Gray wire: NMEA 0183 (4800 bps for DSC data) Output

Green wire: NMEA Negative (Common GND)

i guess since the dsc is there i might as well hook it up. still trying to figure out how to hook this up to an 1157c with an as hhgps? tks Rick
